Cheap SS for girlfriend????

Trying to find something for her on CL but no luck.

Basically I want to get her a half decent singled speed, 50cm frame for around $250 or less.

Suggestions?

Used or new.

cnnrmccloskey 04-13-10 06:25 PM

279$

those are the only sub 300$ new bikes I see, but really your only other options are ebay (which you could probably find a cheap hi-ten single speed for 250 or less) or keep looking on CL

Quick ebay look turned up this

Not even Hi-Ten!

You'll need to post a pic of your girlfriend in order for us to effectively help you.

Does she read this forum? Does she know what a cheap bike you're getting her?

rufus2021 04-14-10 03:06 PM

you'll spend too much $$$ making the bikes direct stuff safe. just have her job behind you.

antiaverage 04-14-10 03:13 PM

Just throw some BMX standers on your rear axle:

????
what?

Scrodzilla 04-14-10 04:40 PM

Yeah, that makes no damn sense.

fixiekid505 04-14-10 06:47 PM

SE Draft.
I've even seen it in a very feminine light blue color.

Scrodzilla 04-14-10 06:51 PM

**** a Draft. We've got a couple at work and they're crap. Save up a little more money and get something from BD. Is she only worth 250 bucks?

1) Tell her that your going to build a bike for her "to use" (DON'T FORGET THIS PART)
2) Make sure that the bike has a higher bling factor. Yes she will notice this and reward you.
3) Ride along merrily until the relationship falls apart.
4) Exercise legal clause from step one, and then either strip the bling (it's like free upgrades), sell it (bonus beer money), or keep it to cry over.

I picked up a Schwinn Qualifier - 48cm by the way, for around 75 bucks, outfitted it with slicks and a Wald High Rise bar. Its a fast little mini velo SS. You'd be amazed what you can find for a cheap SS bike under $100!

Thetank 04-14-10 07:39 PM

First off does she even want a bike? Or are you just trying to get her to ride with you? If she doesn't already have one or shown any kind of interest in the sport, whatever money you spend on any bike is going to be wasted. I speak from experience, my wife's bike sits in the bike room and gets taken out only once in a while, it probably has 20 miles on it total. Not to say this is your case but instead of surprising her with something so personal why not include her in the search so she gets what she wants/fits.

Thank you. sarcasm brought to you by De Beer's

Cheap girlfriend for SS????

bmcginn 04-15-10 12:15 AM

I'm in the Same position. I'm looking at a IRO frame for around 150, or a surly complete from a friend. Might just take the surly since it's been locked up to the same rack for 6 months at least and isn't rideable. He'd never know and she'd love it more.

Ska! 04-15-10 05:41 AM

i thought this was a trade thread, i was getting excited...

try that target "fixed speed" or the walmart mongoose "fixed speed". she may not have street cred but who cares.

but srsly, try the cheaper schwinn models like the cutter, they seem pretty solid. just get all black, then switch out some parts with pink things when you need to and youll be golden.

wroomwroomoops 04-15-10 06:14 AM

I am pretty sure my post will get little attention, but still: how about something like this? Sure, you'd get zero street-cred for riding it, but I bought my wife a similar model, and both of us love riding it. I'm no fan of the seat, so that could get swapped, but otherwise, this is a very comfy ride. I might build/get myself a beater of this kind - and end up riding the heck out of it.

Before you ask: no, I don't mind riding a woman's bike. My junk won't transform into a vag.

My ex-wife got $500 for my full XTR MTB on a $3,500 custom frameset. Once it's in their hands, it's a lost cause.
