Chain Guards

Silly question, so snobby answers are just as welcome as serious ones.

Do you use a chain guard?
Could you recommend a chain guard for a fixed gear?

I'm tired of rolling up my pants or strapping them down.

I had a chain guard on my Surly Steamroller, and I liked having it on there, but then it broke.

So now I'm either in the market for a new one, or considering just forgetting it and sucking it up.

Thoughts?

Not a silly question at all IMO. This might work for you >>> http://www.velo-orange.com/voalpoch.html

Wow, I was going to be fine with something like this:

But the one on velo-orange looks great. I have bought cogs from them, but never looked to see if they had chain guards.

Thetank 04-20-10 12:12 PM

Nothing wrong with a chainguard, had my pant leg get caught in the chainring going full speed downhill and almost ate pavement. I prefer a chainring guard over a chain cover, something like this http://www.velo-orange.com/suchgu.html which looks way better.

illdthedj 04-20-10 12:15 PM

i have fancied getting that same velo orange chainguard myself when i was buying some other stuff from them....im sure you are going to get some people in this thread saying chainguards are stupid or ugly or whatever, but i think that VO one is quite classy and potentially useful.

and so far my experience with VO is that anything they sell there is quality.

That looks a bit like a bash guard. Also, it's 110 BCD instead of 130 or 144, so no go on most fixed gear bicycles.

That said, does a bash guard do just as good a job of keeping your pants out of your chain/chainring?

i prefer the chain cover because it reminds me of old schwinn bikes ;p

I had bashes on all of my 4x bikes and never had my pantleg catch.

BUT, I was also running a 32t front ring and a blackspire blackguard inner chain guard for the "chain sandwich" effect. That setup was nukeproof.

One of my three fixed gear bikes has a bash guard on it that I really use as a pants cuff protector.

110mm.

I wonder if anyone makes a 130 or 144 bash guard.

I doubt it.

Too bad.

I ride my fixed gear bikes in all kinds of weather, and I find that cinder, water and ice in my drive train does no good.

I'd really like a super ultralight fully-sealed chain cover that would keep the crud out of my drive train during the winter.

Black, carbon fiber, please.

antiaverage 04-20-10 01:28 PM

FSA makes a Cyclocross Carbon Fiber Chainguard, but I haven't seen any full coverage items ;)

Might this 130 BCD Ring Guard meant for preventing chain jump on single speeds prevent pant leg jump if mounted to the outside?

Snacklord 04-20-10 10:14 PM

found these guys a while ago.... lots of different sizes....

antiaverage 04-20-10 10:27 PM

Do you think the 130 BCD Cyclocross bash guard you linked, Snacklord, would keep my pants out of my chain?

Snacklord 04-20-10 10:40 PM

I personally haven't tried one out, however I'm planning on getting a Motobecane Fantom Uno that comes with a similar guard....
(but i had the link saved in my bicycle links folder)

others above have stated that a bashguard does work well as a pants-guard.... Yo! said esp. if used with 2 as a 'sandwich' of sorts....

check out the customer pics on the BBG site.... there a few 'sandwich' examples there, but the files are too large to post on here....

antiaverage 04-20-10 10:44 PM

Yeah, although the BBG Bash Guard has considerably less surface area...

Rawr. I'm tempted to try this out.

Snacklord 04-20-10 10:50 PM

Let us know how it works out for you if you do..!!

a pair of sandwiched 1/16' Superlights at $12 a piece is a super decent price I think....

it looks like they would work out great, and look good too..!!

antiaverage 04-20-10 11:03 PM

Now to snag some stack bolts and spacers for these twins...

I'm here.

Seriously bro, chainguard?
Chicks will no longer dig your ride, or you for that matter.

ianjk 04-21-10 12:26 AM

The bashguard helps, but just a bit. IMO just cuff/strap to be on the safe side... I forgot one day and tore my pants from the ankle to the crotch... not embarrassing at all.

What bike is that in the pic?

As far as chain guards go I have gone to just turing all my pants into knickers... I used to use a bash guard and really liked it but they dont make them for my current crankset (omniums) though I would love one...

cleanupinaisle3 04-21-10 07:17 AM

If you want to hide your chain/protect your pants while keeping a fixed gear/hipster aesthetic:

http://vimeo.com/5116465

It really wouldn't look too bad if you used black tubing.

mander 04-21-10 07:52 AM

Ben's made a 144bcd bashguard called the Crusher intended so that you could do chainring grinds on your sugino 75s. It's sold out now and perhaps thats for the best.

I have a wife, she's happy when I do things that make chicks dig me less. Skydiving makes her nervous enough.

Was that with a bash guard? I've torn my pants, but only after having lost my chain guard.

The reason I recommended the bashguard is because my Kona Paddy wagon comes stock with one and I commute on it with jeans and I have yet to catch my pants on the chain.

Awesome, that's the sort of thing I wanted to hear.

That was an old dirt jumper I had, an Identiti Dr. Jekyll.

Keep in mind that the setup on that bike was a race face triple DH crank; I used a 130BCD SS Blackspire chainring with the original Race face bash, and the inner guard is designed to bolt up to the granny ring mounts, the 104bcd ones on the inside of the spider.

I too considered BBG for a few of my MTBs, but I honestly think they'll be more appropriate for keeping your pants out the ring since they're much lighter duty and cost effective.
