Chain Issue?
 

So I ended up loosing some links on my chain and needed a new one. The bike shop sold me a "curb dog" basic chain and installed it. Everything is fine but about once per half hour the chain makes a "shift gears" noise and clicks into place. Its very nerve racking on hills, and never happened to me with my KMC chains. Should I rip this sucker off and put on a new KMC?

I had a KMC z chain that simply wouldn't run quietly from the get go. I took it off and replaced w a Kool chain. Sometimes it helps to lube or remove the chain and inspect it for stiff links.

Just an obvious point, but cleaning the chain often does wonders. When the shifting on my bike isn't smooth or the chain makes noise, I give it a nice run through my Finish Line chain cleaner and it feels like a tune up.

I thought chains were supposed to be all greasy and lubed up. I do see a lot of gunk on it though. I guess I am going wipe the excess off...

Do you have some sort of degreaser? Dip it in some degreaser and let it sit for a bit and rinse it off with water then apply fresh lube; that might reduce the noise.

Yes, get rid of that chain immediately. If it is causing you enough angst that you felt compelled to rail on it on an internet forum full of geeks then by all means take that sucker off and bury it deep in the swamp.

Get yourself a 3/32 SRAM 9-speed chain and get on with the show.

It is because of clicking chains that I carry suitable firepower to deal with such situations. Yeah, that's right; I've always got spare chains in my garage.
