50mm stem with drops, haha!

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...g?t=1271953538

I swiped some parts off this bike in order to ride my other bike (pedals, risers). So I threw on these drops so I could park it up against my wall. I thought it looked pretty cool. Has anyone ever rode a 50mm stem w/ drops. I mean most of you guys are giants so probably not, but what about the smaller guys? BTW, this bike is a 52 and i'm 5'7". Just thought I would throw in some stats to see if it's even plausible. Should i call up Mythbusters?

I don't understand the problem. Why do you ask as if it's odd to have a short stem and drops? Do you have trouble reaching the drops?

I don't have any problem w/ the reach. I've just sat on it like that. I had a
90mm Jag stem on another bike, but never a 50mm w/ drops. I did ride it w/ risers and the 50mm stem. Maybe i'll go for a spin. I've just never seen a bike set up w/ a shorty stem and drops before. That's all.

Having a short stem with drops is fine. Having a short stem and setback seatpost seems a little silly though.

Yeah, I know. It's the only black seatpost that was in stock at the time.

OP, I was using a 70mm w bullhorns for ab 12 miles. Too cramped so I went to a 90mm. However, I found the best stem for my drops is a bit on the shorter side. I like 80mm with drops regardless of tt length.

With such a short stem with relation to the front hub the bike will handle a bit differently at speed.

NateRod 04-22-10 11:33 AM

Whatever works. I'm actually thinking my current stem is a bit too long.

illdthedj 04-22-10 11:37 AM

i have my stem reversed pointing towards me....AND its a 120mm! Im such an individual....

Haha, thanks for all the feedback guys. I will ride it and report back!

not necessary, seatback is to adjust your bike to your upper lag lenght, shou size and style of riding (cadence/energy) where the stem lengh debends on the arms and upper body.

ps: bent thompsons dont have more seatback then most other road seatposts the seat clamp is just in the middle of the tube where it is on other posts behind => seatback is the same
