Nice 1" threadless stems?

Do they exist?

I just recently bought a bike only to find that there was a shim hiding between the steer tube and stem. It's just a personal thing, but I do not like shims.

I do not like them one bit.

Anywho... I was just wondering if there were any nice 1" threadless stems on the market because I don't like the one it came with anyways. I've been doing a lot of searching and have yet to find anything nice that isn't 1 1/8".

Thanks in advance.:thumb:

They don't exist.

Shims are your friends.

Get over it.

You're welcome.

I came across those, but I just don't like it enough to justify the 150 dollar price tag.

I had to use a shim also.

Yes. use a shim. you will get a buttload of options.

TimArchy 04-23-10 06:47 AM

There was a point in time when companies were making them. Salsa and a few others. They are around, but difficult to find and many are not very good quality.

Why so scared ab using a shim?

I can see being reluctant to use a shim on bar clamps or seatposts, but from 1 1/8 to 1" on a steerer is really pretty standard.

I mean, Thomson doesn't make a 1"; they'll tell you to use their shim. And the Thomson shim's are quality pieces.

nitto makes one I think.

i use a 3T mutant (mine's black) i'm not sure if they are still made though... ebay would be the way to go for 1" threadless.

I used the 3t mutant for a while as well. Not a bad stem. But I later switched to a shimmed stem because I wanted less rise.

Shimming is not that big of a deal and will open up a world of options to you.

saladbar 04-23-10 09:49 AM

Soma makes one. I don't know if it's nice though.

Carlun 04-23-10 10:43 AM

ahh the good old 3t mutant, i have a black one too, won it off ebay for about 35 shipped haha

Velo Orange makes a pretty clean looking silver polished 1 inch threadless stem. My friend sells a decent number of them at his shop as the aluminum track bike he designed and sells is a 1 inch steerer tube. I can only comment on its appearance as my bikes all take threaded headsets and quill stems.

It's not a shim, it's an adapter.

a shim is for 1" threadless to 1 1/8" threadless. an adapter is for threaded to threadless. it's a shim.

Just a guess, but I think the concern is if the shim fails your bars could spill forwards and send you tumbling. This wouldn't be a problem for flat bars, but pretty much anything else this could be an issue. That said, the chances of a shim failing are basically zero if mounted properly.

If we call it an adapter, which technically it would be, we get around his aversion to using shims.

So you're saying that you haven't actually read this thread?

Yes, it is 1", Yes it is Cinelli and Yes, it is Titanium. :)

And thanks again to the bike forums community, if it wasn't for your skepticism I wouldn't have realized how rare this kind of thing really was.

I can't appreciate the beauty of the stem because I am so distracted by the half dozen spacers being used with drop bars. At least you didn't need a shim.

Shut the hell up, it's not your bike, I shouldn't have to explain to you what I use the bike for and how it fits me.
