Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Know of any shops that specialize in fixed gear bikes in Orlando, FL?

For Valentines Day my girlfriend bought me a really cool, vintage, Lejeune bike frame and is having it shipped from overseas. I have road bikes, English 3-speeds, cruisers etc so I thought I would see what all the fuss is about with the fixed gear bikes on this one. My girlfriend spent a decent amount on this frame and I know that compatibility with vintage parts can be tricky, so I would prefer taking it to a shop that specializes in these bikes and knows what they are doing. I know I'm not going to find anything here on the beach or in Melbourne because the shops pretty much only sell standard beach cruisers with a few road bikes. Any advice on shops in Orlando that you would recommend? (Orlando is the closest real city and is only about an hour away)

You don't really need a shop that specializes in fixed gears to help you build one. Any shop mechanic that has a good resume in the bike biz will be able to help you i'm sure. My lbs doesn't sell a thing to cater to fixed gear bikes I thought I was gonna get hated on bringing my bike in but all the dudes there were stoked on my bike and ended up knowing a lot about SSFG bikes. So you can't judge a book by its cover.

I can answer your question and offer some advice. There is a shop in Winter Park, FL which is near Orlando. The shop is called Ace Metric, he specializes in Fixed Gear/SS bikes. While this is the case, I wouldn't call it a shop more like a botique. He carries a lot of nice things and can probably take care of all of your needs, but it will be at a premium price. https://acemetric.blogspot.com/

fixed gear single speed boutiques and high prices go hand in hand.

What makes a city real vs. fake? There has to be multiple bike shops that are close to you. A 2 hour round trip sounds pretty far, not to mention if you are leaving your bike and coming back a different day.

Go to Ace Metric. They will have what you need, parts and smarts. The owner has good taste in Euro and vintage stuff too, so your bike will probably be well received.
