vertical dropouts
just found out th dude selling me the frame told me theyre vertical dropouts -_-
i cant make it into a fixie now righT? =[ |
You can with 1) an ENO hub or 2) a magic gear.
The former is expensive and the latter is cheap but limiting and potentially frustrating. |
uhg dang. eno hubs are expensive! and im researching magic gear but it sounds so confusing
should i just look for a new frame? |
I think you'll save yourself a lot of grief if you just find a new frame with track ends or horizontal dropouts. I have thought about an ENO hub for my old Trek 5200, but it's a sentimental favorite.
|
That might be the best idea.
|
Get a dremel tool and just make them horizontal . . . :innocent:
|
My friend has a conversion with vertical dropouts
he found the magic gear :) |
deeeng haha wheres a good place to find frames besdies craigslist?
|
I went to my LBS to find the perfect chain length, 18t w/ 48t, or you can use chain tensioner

Dumpsters and back alleys have good frames lying around.
He can't use a chain tensioner since he is going to run fixed gear. Have you got the rear wheel yet rgoo? If it is a flip flop hub, then you could go singlespeed with the tensioner until you find an appropriate frame. |
no i was going to drive to riverside to pick up frame and wheel tommorow =[
now ill just have a wheel =[ i guess i could use my 58 frame for now(it has horizontal dropoutS) but i wanted like a 54 =[ |
Riding an oversized bike is not fun, wait for a bit until a decent frame spawns on CL.
|
I hope your deal works out rgoo, you seem so excited about this whole thing but kept on bumping into problems...

Guys, I'm not sure if you are aware, but one must upgrade one's membership in order to sell or ask to buy items ("wanted" ads)
It's not expensive: http://www.bikeforums.net/payments.php As cheap as $3 for 30 days. Feel free to continue your conversations via PM or email. |

should i just look for a new frame? - it's done cheaply with bad tolerances, and this was the source of the slight misalignment problem. - the bearings are the crappiest, cheapest made in China cartridges you can find on the market. ENO eccentric hubs are bad news also because you MUST use that one wheel with your bike, you have no other option. No other wheel will work, as long as you need to tension the chain. Compare this to, for instance, horizontal dropouts, or eccentric bottom brackets, or sliding dropouts, where you can put any wheel you like. And magic gears don't work. All the positive accounts you'll find (not that many, actually), are from people that either only ran a magic gear for a week or two, and then the chain slacked, or they only ride like 2 Km/day. Basically, even at the slightest chain elongation, the chain will slack dangerously. Also, it's really hard to find a gear ratio that will be both "magic" (chain is in tension) and acceptable for riding (usually it'll be too high or too low). In conclusion: get a frame with horizontal dropouts. |
