Beware the 700x25 Vittoria Randonneurs
 

Vittoria Randonneurs are wonderful tires its just that I became aware lately that the 700x25 version does not make a good rear tire if you like to slow down by skipping/skidding. I have found that a 700x28 usually lasts me at least two months but this 700x25 started showing the red puncture protection layer on the second ride and after only a week I'm down to the first layer of threads. I should have saved it for a front tire as I originally intended to do. :(

Maybe your skid patches are minimal, what gear ratio are you using?

Very true.
I got them when the week they came out in the shop. Lasted me about a week.
Now I'm back to the 28s. Never leaving them again.

Don't get me wrong. I like riding fixed gear, but I don't do it that much, and I'd like to learn from those of you who have done it more.

I'm not trolling or tweaking.

47x18 for a total of 36 skid spots. I ride in a moderately hilly area. I've had cheaper tires last longer than this.

On another note, the guy from trackosaurus rex posted an article ab this a few days after they came out expressing his disappointment. He said it's just a 28c with less rubber.

Expensive and durable don't correlate.

randos have a terrible ride quality. hate the 28s

also, in tire reviews, the fyxation sessions 28 is really huge. more like a 32, wouldnt fit my frame (my rando 28 fit fine, michelin dynamic 28 fit as well, this one was no where close). anybody interested in a brand new mounted once lime green tire?

You should re-title this thread "Beware of skidding on any tire" :P

go very easy on the skidding and you won't have anything to complain about

save yourself the stress and just get a brake :shrug:

I'm not making fun of you cuz I've ridden brakeless for a year and a half so I know what's up, but using the brake really makes you ? what one was trying to prove without one. Heck you can even rock a brake and not use it still :)

ill concur this.
my fork fits pretty much all 28cs BUT the fyxations. they are very nice tires though....wish fyxation made 25cs (would be more like 28cs)

How's the puncture resistance of them? They look nice and I could sure go for a change from my usual gatorskins....

they probably have less flat protection than gatorskins but ride better. i would say their flat protection is still decent overall though

I have had a pair of 700 x 25 Vittoria Randonneur City tyres on through one of the rpoughest winters here for a while in terms of wet, gritty, muddy and flooded roads. I have not had a puncture for months when normally I would have one at least once every 3 weeks with supposedly top of the range puncture-proof tyres. they have acquired a number of cuts/ nicks such that I can glimpse the puncture protection, but these have not punctured and they do not feel as though they theaten the integrity of the tyre, and they are not 'opening up' any further beyond the extent of the initial cut.

The tyres are also very fast (up to 130psi).

I must admit that when the tyres were newly fitted they did seem a little slippery in the wet, but this soon disappeared as they bedded in. They have worn very well however and I do not envisage having to change them for many months. Normally I would anticipate going through at least 2 rear tyres over the winter. I have already bought another pair of the tyres for stock.

yep. for skidding, get everwears. they weigh twelve pounds and ride like garbage but there's so much garbage there that they'll last forever.

you gotta play to play: nice tires have softer rubber for better grip, thinner, more supple casings for better ride, and cost more. skidding on these is an expensive habit. nothing like skidding on a 320tpi race tires once, ONCE and catching a sharpish pebble. instaflat.

Which are totally different tires than the ones being discussed in this very old thread.
