What is a Fixie good for?

Hey guys, i bout a Motobecane Outcast SS 29er with 03 Bomber Shox yesterday for only 275 bucks.. he gave me a few extra sprockets and also he gave me a Fixie type sprocket.

ok, i know what it is to a basic extent. i know that you cant stop peddling when its on... but why?! why do people do this? i want to know what its good for before i put it on there. do you benefit in anyway?
PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG ON THIS! i think i am, i only started mountain biking about a mount ago
Thanks so much!

It's good for fun.

Johnny Law 05-06-10 08:42 PM

but what does it do lol

what is the difference, do you really have to keep peddling, what if you stop?

Squirrelli 05-06-10 08:42 PM

They are prefect for losing finger tips when fixing on your drive train.

AEO 05-06-10 08:44 PM

not pedalling makes you slower, even on geared bikes.

The pedals carry your feet when you stop putting effort into it, thers alot of threads asking the same question, also cheack this out http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html

That question pretty much answers itself. If you can never stop peddling, you wind up selling way more than if you had the option to stop, and your commissions go through the roof.

the crusty old road bike is the new fixie. Stay ahead of the game son!

I agree with that statement, Fixed gears have some potential. Fixed wheels, on the other hand are always cool

gitarzan 05-06-10 10:39 PM

It's a fashion statement.

I keep a better candace with my fixed gear & I have more fun with my fixed gear :)

magic-conch 05-06-10 11:15 PM

It's simple, light, easy maintenance, fast, and best of all, FUN!!!

:) Give it a try. I hope you have a lock ring though.

Pure kinetic energy, the bike follows your rhythm completely. You can get going really fast, too. It's nice not to hear anything while you're riding, as well.

bleedingapple 05-07-10 12:04 AM

my knees are happier than when I rode with gears... as are my wheels because I would more often than not forget to shift...

they have the potential to be light, which is relative AND most bikes that get raced on a velodrome are not as light as bikes that get raced on the road, two different types of machine. Fast, what a n00b thing to say, it's entirely situational, ESPECIALLY for a fixed gear.

+1 on the fun though

They are also good for killing worn race tires, which fits into the fun category.

only if you ride brake-less with your feet off the pedals :P

Entirely situational? What a sack eater thing to say. "Entirely situational" can apply to any bike! You can't just put a fat blob on a road bike and say "Oh he's gonna be fast".
