Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Conversion? BikesDirect has smaller bike's too, down to 44cm. I don't know what the standover is on a 44cm bike, but that's pretty small.

iro heidi. they're awesome and take 650c wheels so they fit very very small riders, smaller than any bd bike and better too. the fuji 44cm isn't a good bike. heidi all the way.

here's my old housemate's bike:

The 44cm Kilo has a standover of 28.5"

My wife is 5'2" and opted for a conversion of a decent older road frame (but that was mostly because she wanted something with lugggs).

I used to know a gent of less than average stature that loved mixte frames.
I converted one for him and he was happy as a clam (but not one of the ones in the gulf)

Enjoy

My buddies wife is about the same height, and is having trouble finding a bike small enough to fit her, I saw a 650cc Bianchi at Sic Transit Cycles in Ann Arbor Michigan that looked about right, $425 bikes for a fully built bike. It wasn't fixed/SS but it was a nice bike!

do you know she's really going to ride this bike?

if she's looking for something that fits well and you're thinking of putting a lot of miles on it... a custom frame may be the best, and a well-worth it option. lots of framebuilders will work on pricing and if you can't find something that fits her(4'10" is nice and small) but still don't want to go too crazy on building a bike, a budget-conscious frame might be a great way to solve her problem.

also, mixte conversions are great.
but you seemed to be asking about new bikes. so yeah. heidi.

I'm in the same situation. I'm looking for a bike for my 5'1" Wife. I'm thinking the Heidi is the way to go. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks for a bike that she'll be able to enjoy for a long time to come vs a conversion or something not up to par.

I was considering the Kilo TT because she likes the blue. I'm afraid she won't be comfortable on it tho.

Just built my girlfriend a Soma Buena Vista. She's 5'1" and fits well on the 42cm (uses 26" wheels). I imagine someone was short as 4'10" could ride it okay.

If you feel like doing a conversion, look into vintage Terry frames. Terry also built some really nice really small bikes for Centurion. They have a smaller front wheel with a 700c rear to help preserve geometry.

Heidi is a good off the shelf option. My gf is short but not quite that small, so I built a conversion with a smallish road frame.
