Clamp-on Front Brake

Tried searching the forum and was surprised there wasn't much on these brake systems.

What I am wondering is if any one has experience with them and can offer advice. I am of course talking about the modified brakes for track forks that clamp on to the fork blades so you don't need to drill the fork out.

The concern I have is in damaging the fork in anyway and of course the reliability and safety of the brakes. I live in the mountains and brake hard down very long descents. So if these brakes are just designed for shuffling through traffic then I want to know if I am better off just drilling the fork. The fork on this frame was actually designed to be drilled, there's a starter dimple where the hole would go. But it hasn't been drilled for 25 years and I'd like to keep it original, or not if I have to.

I haven't had any issues with my clamp on front brake, but I use it sparingly (as a supplement to my legs), in urban traffic. I don't know how it would do braking hard and often. You could always pull your fork and use another drilled one. Or run the front clamp on + a rear brake.

I use cfront and used a back for awhile. My forks are bladed and bigger than most track bikes so I assume they can handle the stress better. If you need brakes for going down hill I;d suggest the front and back kits. Rear barakes take a hefty load off of the front when going down hills.

These clamp on fronts seem to work about as good as drilled in ones as long as everything is kept tight.
Ive ridden on them and they felt fine.
But then again, I havent had a brake on any of my bikes in 4 years.

do you know if clamp on brakes can be mounted a bit offset from where a brake would "normally" sit? Don't want to pay ~50$ to test.
I've got this odd bicycle and the clearance at the fork fits 23s but the tire rubs against the underside of the brake.

I have a friend with the front brake only and she does not skip or skid. No problems for her but NYC is fairly flat (not counting the bridges). I have seen people on NJS frames running a freewheel with both the front and rear clamp on brakes so I guess people are trusting the stopping power. There is essentially a limit type screw that braces the brake itself if it were to push back toward the fork crown. I think most people stick one of those little felt adhesive circles on the fork crown to prevent the screw from digging in.
