First time using a chain whip, just not getting it for some reason
 

so i'm trying to remove my cog with my chain whip for the first time and i can't seem to line up the chain with the teeth.

someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong. i have the sr-1 tool from park

do you have a 1/8" cog?
Because im pretty sure the SR-1 is 3/32"

it doesn't seem to have a problem with the width, just not lining up. i feel like i'm just missing something really stupid.

If I am reading what he is telling you correctly...it is not going to line up. Your cog is on a spacing of 1/8" and the chain whip is a bit smaller at 3/32" , and thus why the teeth won't line up.

your cog is "wide", your chainwhip is "skinny". You need a "wide" chainwhip.

The good news is that 3/32" whips can be converted to 1/8" if you've got a chain-tool and some old 1/8" chain lying around.

just use the rotofix method to remove the cog...

yeah, i do use the rotafix method. i just have this tool in my park tool kit and i thought since i have the tool i might as well put it to use. i guess i'll try switching the chain out of the chainwhip and see if that will do it.

+1 and you'll be good for both 3/32 and 1/8 :D

Go to your LBS and they'll be glad to give you some old chain of that size for free.

+2 to converting the SR-1 to 1/8" chain. I also needed some of those QR master chain links, as my chain tool wouldn't fit to put regular chain onto the SR-1. But quick'n'easy job.
