H plus sons

I currently have Vuelta XRPs and have been in the market for something stronger/lighter.

My friend said she'll sell me her old H PLUS ONES for super cheap. Should I do it? Is this an upgrade?

Thoughts? Thanks

H-Plus rims are fairly deep so pretty heavy. So they ain't a rim you should be looking for something lighter. It's gonna be stiffer, but there are plenty other rims. Although they look freaking awesome if setup right, a big negative on Hplus is probably the price when bought new. How much is your friend asking for?

If you are looking for strength, deep-V isn't the only answer. There are deceptively strong boxed rims like CR18 or M13II which looks pretty nice with certain bicycle frames. (At least, it's deceptive for me the noob)

my M13II, while pretty, had a NASTY bit of hop to it. no amount of spoke work could fix it (unless i just suck)

and h+sons are about the same weight as a velocity deep v iirc, or not much more. probably less than vuelta deep section rims.

my formation face rear has given me exactly zero problems. only went out of true when i kicked it a bunch trying to get it straight (it slipped in my dropout and i didn't have a wrench, my kicking just untrued my wheel, didn't help at all lol)

I thought hpluSons are light.

ichitz 05-20-10 08:24 AM

formation face: 615g
SL42: 615g
F30: 540g
EERO: 790g

Dosu 05-20-10 08:32 AM

deep v's weigh more than 615g right?

Tifore 05-20-10 09:28 AM

I think Veeps are like 450g's IIRC. Not 100% sure though.

Tomo_Ishi 05-20-10 09:57 AM

Deep V is 520g according to Velocity's specs. AeroHead is supposedly 450g. ... Looks like most of rims are pretty comparable.

How about welded or non-welded issue? I was lacing R475 (another deep-v) and it's welded. Its welds are strong, but the rim gets a little bit imprecise near the welds, so tuning gets a bit tricky. Deep-V has that too but was less difficult. (socketed together right?) Hplus stuffs are welded. I haven't laced those before.

A perfect timing, I was about to redo my twisted-spoke front wheel the right way. Maybe it may be time to do both.

only 700c 450g 30mm deep rim would be tubular.

all 700c clincher types weigh more than 465g. Lightest ones are kinlin XR-300

blickblocks 05-20-10 11:59 AM

H plus son

reasonably light for a deep rim

more importantly the best looking 40mm+ deep aluminum rim. The only other deep aluminum rim I'd rather have is a Campagnolo Atlanta '96.

Dosu 05-20-10 01:23 PM

So out of strong rims, formation face, deep v ect, what are the lightest around the same price

can you not read?

those 30mm kinlins are *very* nice rims and come in many colors, though all with a machined brake surface. at 180-185lbs, i run a set with 20/24 spokes and haven't touched them with probably 10k on 'em.

you rode spinergies, your argument is invalid

Dosu 05-20-10 04:06 PM

Know any site that sells em built up already around the price of $210-250 like the v deeps

I think Xero wheels sells prebuilt wheels on kinlin rims.
I don't know if they do track wheels, however.
oh, and they don't have a good reputation.

Dosu 05-20-10 04:26 PM

Ah okay, thanks for looking anyway.

I'd totally take on the offer, hplussons are quality rims, you definitely can't go wrong with them

not to mention you add more bling bling then any velocity deep v's or b45's will bring

Just lighter than the b43.... and that's just for the SL42.... the triple walled H plus son is heavier than the b43 which is triple walled as well....

Holy ****! Here's the specs. She has the invoice to prove it.

2 H+Rims,
72 spokes, Hoshi stainless, Japan.
2 Dura Ace NJS hubs, 36h, new.
1 Dura Ace NJS lockring.
Track nuts.
Built by Kishiguchi Yoh from Ocean Cycle Factory, Osaka Japan.

300bux! I am doing it

LupinIII 05-20-10 07:34 PM

wtf fook you 300 is a steal price for that

Dosu 05-20-10 07:49 PM

velocity v deeps are just abit lighter than formation face and just as good quality right?

why hoshi spokes?
why not DT or wheelsmith DB spokes?

dookie 05-20-10 08:14 PM

nice deal.

you're obviously not concerned about 'light'.
