Gear ratio question
 
My bike came stock with 46 18 ive looked and and im cofused as to would 17 be a higher or lower gear and are cogs made a higher then 18? I want this to be one of the first things I change just maybe 1-2 gears lower i dont live in a flat area.

48-18 is lower than 48-17.
Depending on the company, some cogs go all the way up to 22 or even more.
If you are going to climb a lot of hiil, 48-18 is good for you but you might spin out easily when you are going down the other side.

try an 18 or 19 cog.

I have 46x19 and a lot of climb around here are do able. Going down these hills is another issue and something to train for, but when you can spin down the hills without problems you'll feel great!
