A grinding feeling on the upstroke
 

Hi guys,

On my fixed gear during the drive side upstroke I feel a grinding sort of sensation through the pedals. It feels smoothish and not like anything is grinding, it is more like tiny vibrations.

I was wondering if this is anything to do with chain tension? The chainline looks good.

It could be a dirty chain.

You might be onto something with chain tension. To check, pick up or somehow support the rear wheel off the ground (I use one of those showroom bike holders that hold up the rear by the axles) and give the rear wheel a push. The chain will loosen and slack a bit because no crank or cog is truly round. What you want to see is if chain tension slows/stops the wheel from spinning. You'll probably have to spin the wheel a few times. If it does stop/inhibit free spinning loosen the chain up a pinch. Repeat until joy returns to your life.

I have a workstand so I will try to see if it is the tension.

Just got my kilo pro last week, having the same problem.. :( could it be the bottom bracket?

Yes. Take the chain off and rotate the cranks with your hands, applying pressure in various directions (since it will likely be smooth without any weight on it whether the bottom bracket is adjusted correctly or not). If you feel a wobble, play, or grinding, you've found the problem. If not, it's somewhere in the remained of the driveline.

I had a problem with my cranks grinding too. If its a new bike, just ride it out. The parts are new and you need to smooth out the cog and chainring. If that doesn't work, what worked for me was taking off the chainring and putting it back on to re-center it. Maybe your chainring is slightly elliptical also.
