Sugino 75 Crank + Chainring Problem
 

This is my first build; not too familiar with assembly. I got a great deal on these from a guy on craigslist. The crank doesn't seem to line-up with the chainring:

I'm guessing you bought the wrong sized chainring for those cranks.

IIRC 75's are 144 BCD, so you need to find a chainring with the same BCD. (Anyone else feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Wrong size chainring, and yes, 75s are 144 BCD.

I am not sure what is larger than 144 though, as most road stuff is either 130 or 110,

They used to make track cranks in 151 bcd, except that the gap between the holes and inside edges are larger, so I have no idea what that chainring would fit.

Thanks guys, i figured it was wrong... Just confusing because the chianring is sugino 75 also, and they were sold to me as a matched set... Can anyone direct me to somewhere i can purchase the correct sized chainring?

There are lots of chainrings that will fit that are all 144 bcd. You can pay close to $100 for an official Sugino 75 NJS chainring, or save a lot by buying other brands like FSA. Just go on eBay and search on "chainring 144 bcd".

Hmm. Does your chainring say:

Sugino 75
SSG 144 xxT

on top of one of the bolts? Where "xx" is the tooth count?

And does the inside of your driveside crank have the following engraved:

JAPAN X-XX yyy

where "X-XX" is some code like "H-11" and "yyy" is the crank length?

If not, perhaps we have found FAKE bike parts?! Haha.

The chainring DOES look like a 75 chainring, right down to the outer groove/indentation.

Also, make sure it's the chainring that's not 144, and not the crank being 130. Measure the distance between the centre of adjacent bolts. Who knows, maybe the crank's messed up (for whatever reason).

If so, your cranks might be 130...which is odd...

OP - Please measure the distance in millimeters between the centers of two adjacent bolt holes in the crank and multiply that number by 1.7. That will be your crank arm bcd. Then we'll have a better idea of what is going on here, although I'd be totally amazed if the cranks turn out to be anything other than 144 bcd. It measures 144mm.


The Crank reads:

Japan H-4 170

It does measure smaller, 130ishmm.

Looks like you found mock 75's or what would be more rare, actual 75's in 130. Id Sell the ring and get a new one. You can probably sell that ring for like $60.

OP - Please post a photo of the rear side of the crank arm. Does it have a shoulder for an inside chainring? I wonder if Sugino ever made a road double version of the model 75's. Maybe one of our Japanese members might shed some light on this.

Hey Adriano, are your Suginos labelled "75" ?

They're not RD cranks or Mighty Comp, as they have a less "curvy" design. They have the edges that 75s have. They do sell a road version of the Mighty Comp that can accept two chainrings, but they don't have the same crank design. And these are actually labelled 75s.

Those should fetch quite a bit. Try selling them.

Not all 75 cranks actually say "75." The black ones simply say Sugino, like mine:

I agree. Take them to a reputable shop nearby and have them take a look. If they are indeed 130BCD 75's, then you should be able to sell them for a profit. As in sell them, get 144BCD 75's, and come out with some money for a new cog and lockring at the least.

yo there are no SG75 130BCD cranks. those are fake. Notice how the stickers are on upside down/backwards. There is also an inner shelf. These are obviously fake.

Those are double cranks. I hope you got a really good deal on them.
