New fixies and have a question!!! need reply quick!

For this bike on ebay I plan on getting...

http://cgi.ebay.com/TOMCAT-FIXED-GEAR-FIXIE-SINGLE-SPEED-ROAD-BIKE-BK-53cm-/270602897971?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f01308a33

You know how the wheels have the tire and than the white circle thing covering the spokes? Is it possible to take that off?

JesusBananas 07-07-10 02:17 PM

URL post fail.

chris482 07-07-10 02:21 PM

fixeeed

hairnet 07-07-10 02:27 PM

you want to remove the rim tape?

reading everything listed about that bike makes me laugh

chris482 07-07-10 02:28 PM

is that whats its called? its the circular thing right under the tire. and its white. is it possible?

seejohnbike 07-07-10 02:29 PM

i think those white things youre talkin about are the rims. no, you cant take them off. i mean, technically you can, but im going to hazard a guess that youre new to this, so i'll just say no. if you want different lookin wheels, you'll most likely have to buy new ones.

furthermore, i havent seen anything about these ever. they dont look terrible, but with no track record and all no-name components, you'd probably be better off with something from bikes direct...

chris482 07-07-10 02:32 PM

Yes, Im new xp. And how much are new wheels though? and are you saying this is not a suggested bike? the rims does not look good to me
then I might not get it but I'm considering

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-GAVIN-FIXED-...item1e5cc966ab

what do you think of that?

motobeCarnage 07-07-10 02:37 PM

the photoshopped graffiti background speaks the the urban in me. Must buy

I'm guessing the same goes for you desert dwellers.

squeegeesunny 07-07-10 02:39 PM

I am pretty damn sure that that is the machined surface for brakes. And No.

seejohnbike 07-07-10 02:43 PM

for wheels, go here: http://www.velomine.com/index.php?ma...hh9roum08kasp2

for info on that bike, use the search feature. i could have sworn there was a post about em within the past few days.

furthermore, if you havent already, look here: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/trackbikes.htm they are among the cheapest, easiest ways to get into fixed/ss riding, but unlike many other cheap/inexpensive bike manufactures, they have a fairly long track record, and a wealth of info on their bikes here. pick some bikes you like, and search for them here. i guarantee you will find info about them.

TheBikeRollsOn 07-07-10 02:43 PM

LOL at removing the rims.

But seriously, I've always thought the Gavin looked like a decent buy but haven't heard anything about them really.

Almost everyone here is going to say go here and pick something.

I've seen reviews on the gavin

http://www.roadbikeoutlet.com/review...8/category/55/

and they say its really good.

but what do you guys suggest at bike direct?

seejohnbike 07-07-10 03:33 PM

look for reviews/discussion about bikes on here. for one, all of those reviews are absolutely glowing, with no real discussion of negatives. also, you don't know what type of rider they are, whether it's their 1st or 10th bike, etc etc.

the info you find here will (hopefully) be more comprehensive, from a wider pool of riders than first time fixed buyers, and if you have any follow up questions, you can ask them.

at bikesdirect, there is no "what do we suggest"; it's all about what you're looking for. they're all pretty much equally decent bikes, so pick something with the features you're looking for, and then search the forums for info about it. if you don't find what you're looking for, then, and only then should you start a new discussion about it.

(there's a TON of info on the bikesdirect bikes here, so you best be searching for it.)

:roflmao:

Those are ALL shill reviews, trust me.
1) RBO sells the Gavin.
2) I've seen those identical reviews plastered on other websites talking about the Gavin. Don't trust any reviews for RBO bikes unless it's by someone on a forum with more than just one post. For example, I know there are legit reviews on both bikeforums and roadbikereview forums. Use Google search if you can't find it; it tends to be more reliable than the built-in forum search.

this one made me lol

Leukybear 07-07-10 04:20 PM

I love how the seller photoshopped in the bike to some backgrounds....

http://www.savingextra.com/images/to...ck-white-2.jpg

Look it's taller than than a ford taurus!

JesusBananas 07-07-10 04:49 PM

Oh yea, happypill's picture is definitely photoshopped, although I'm pretty sure cnnrmccloskey's is not.

Kylet5285 07-07-10 05:20 PM

This is a situation that I would highly recommend the thread maker to go to a bike shop and learn some more about bicycles before purchasing. the increased price is well worth it if you are new to cycling.

and this ebay sale posting is off the wall hahahaha

squeegeesunny 07-07-10 05:23 PM

I concur.

I gotta give it those guys, traveling all the way out to a desert to take a picture for their bike.

Scrodzilla 07-07-10 05:52 PM

And somehow making it levitate above a canyon!

squeegeesunny 07-07-10 06:03 PM

Their photoshop skills are pretty flawless though.
