help with new cranks/toe overlap

i'm getting new cranks soon when i can finally decide which ones i go for (which i think i have) but the question now for me is what length i should get the crank arms. the bike i had before were 170mm and i remember i didn't like the shorter 165mm cranks that came with my new bike. i've gotten used to the shorter arm lengths now, but i'm thinking i might want to go back to 170mm. i know 165mm gives you a little more clearance but the bigger issue for me would be the toe overlap. i find the the tiny overlap i have now, SOOO annoying and of course it will be worse with longer crank arms. the thing is there was no overlap with the stock clips. i use origin8's double clips. the double clips are very comfortable for me and help me skid better.

ideally i'd want to get a 170mm or 167.5mm crank and shorter clips and no toe overlap. i've seen the half clips and they don't look very secure. i hope what i'm asking isn't unreasonable :twitchy:

Toe overlap isn't really a problem.

Half clips arn't really foot retention

i know it shouldn't be, and i didn't think it would, but i'm finding the minimal toe overlap i have now really annoying so i'd like to get rid of it if possible

Toe overlap is real and the world would be a brighter place if it did not exist. Normally, it's not the end of anyone's little world. Adjustments to riding style are made. If you are severely handicapped by toe overlap because of the conditions you ride in then you need a new bike. Plain and simple. If you increase your crank arm length you will increase your toe overlap. Ain't no free lunch. You could try clipless or plain, old platforms if you have a front brake. Riding on platforms only isn't the big no-no some make it out to be. Clips and straps are better and clipless could arguably be the best option for keeping you firmly attached to your bike while allowing easy entry/exit. But again, if you have toe overlap then you have toe overlap. Life could be worse.

Getting longer cranks is going to do the exact opposite of solving your dilemma.

Half-clips aren't the answer, as they're not any smaller - they just don't come up onto the top part of your foot as much because they don't need to hold straps in place.

There's no cure. Learn how to ride your bike.

You should thank me without the question marks. I gave you the straight answer without being a butthead and offered a few ways that could help. For example, clipless and regular flats can help with toe overlap a bit because your foot is capable of minor adjustments as opposed to a rigid clip banging against the tire/wheel. You are under no obligation to listen (to good advice) but being smarmy to someone who again offered solid advice is just dumb.
