Time for a new chain

So it seems like i am going to be replacing my chain soon. Just wanted to know if anybody out there had some good suggestions or favorites that they would recommend.

motobeCarnage 07-09-10 10:11 AM

One that matches the color of your bike of course.

wmgreene85 07-09-10 10:11 AM

I use an Izumi Economy Chain. Its about 25 dollars but, from my experience, is extremely reliable and well built

xavier853 07-09-10 10:14 AM

I am using, or will be soon as the bike isn't quite finished, the Miche Pista chain.

TejanoTrackie 07-09-10 10:22 AM

So, are you changing the chain because it is worn, or just because you want something different? If the chain is badly worn, you may need to change your cog as well.

White_Lightning 07-09-10 10:27 AM

i am changing the chain because it is worn and is starting to stretch. the chain isn't badly worn at this point but i will also be replacing the rear cog at the same time. as for chains i am just looking for something durable/reliable and resistant to stretching.

Scrodzilla 07-09-10 10:28 AM

I've got a Miche Pista on one bike and a KMC Z510 on the other. I can tell no difference between them when riding.

TejanoTrackie 07-09-10 10:37 AM

SRAM PC-7X is real good, but so are Wipperman Whitestar and Izumi Eco, all for under $20. I don't like the way KMC chains are made and don't use them.

Dr. Banzai 07-09-10 10:38 AM

I like quiet chains. Sram PC7-X on my bike right now. Stealth.

What exactly do you not like about them?

Quiet chains are a combo of proper lubing, straight chainline, and quality components. not just the chain. But i might just have to try that one out.

Roller design my friend. Roller design. Some chains just have a roller that is a touch too big for the pin and it's noisy. Every roller is loose fit on the pin in bushingless chains, but some chains try to save weight on the roller and it can rattle a bit.

Interesting.. I think I'll make the SRAM my next chain. I'm trusting you chief, only of course cuz u're a doctor.

KMC chains are made by stamping the inner link plates to join the two sections and form the bushing instead of the traditional method of using a separate collar. This weakens the plate metal, results in slop between the two sides on the inner link as well as between the pin and the link. My 2006 Bianchi Pista Concept came with a KMC K-5A chain and it was noisy and did not mesh consistently with the chainrings.

I'm a neurosurgeon, I drive my jetcar through mountains and I play in a great band. I know my chains. Also see TT's reply as to why I run a SRAM chain as well. Banzai out.

Scrodzilla 07-09-10 01:26 PM

My KMC chain is very quiet, despite reports that they can be loud. The wife's as well (and hers is pink). Everyone also talks of how weak they are but my fat ass hasn't broken one yet.

Dr. Banzai 07-09-10 01:34 PM

All my years of riding BMX I never broke a KMC, but they were very tinny sounding. KMC 510 was my staple.

Love my SRAM PC-7X. It's three years old and getting retired in a few weeks for emergency spare links. Three years is long enough to trust your life to a chain.

Same here minus the never breaking one before... I broke one of their Z - chain's before on a hill climb/ charge in my case....

adriano 07-09-10 03:04 PM

broken chains are user error.

Err how's that possible when I get my chainline kept by my LBS, which happens to specialize in fixed and ss?

adriano 07-09-10 03:38 PM

happens.

Dr. Banzai 07-09-10 03:39 PM

I do not trust my bike to an LBS except if I am lazy about wheel building.

User error is when humans are involved. Your LBS has humans I assume. They are not as fussy about your bike as you can be. You put the pin in sloppy, move on to the rush job that is that hot girl in pink shorts. Anyone who speciliazes in SS/FG is not a god.

you need to do it yourself.

ern 07-09-10 04:20 PM

just got a sram pc1 and its great. i used to back the kmc z chains but this is much better constructed and feels a lot better. as far as wear/stretch i don't have any reviews because i haven't had it for more than a month and a half. so far i'm converted.

I actually have one of these, very handy and the chain breaker is kind of good too.

Some shops let the rookies/interns/newbies do the easy tasks, and they could mess up if they aren't careful about it.

adriano 07-09-10 06:06 PM

i have the 17, and it blows my mind.
