Single or double straps for fixed gear?
Hi guys!
I just wanted to ask you if you recommend double straps for fixed gear riding or do you think that also single straps are strong enough for that? Do you have any recommendations for straps? Cheers |
I have single straps, but I rarely skid.
|
I think it's a matter of preference. I currently use single straps but have ridden double strapped bikes before and noticed no difference while riding. If you're riding brakeless and skid to stop, then double straps may be the better choice. The single straps on my bike feel a bit flimsy and unsecured when i skid, but I dont skid often so depends on the kind of riding you plan to do.

I would not ride with singles unless I had a brake
|
Single + brake, w/ no issues. Not much of a skidder, though. If I didn't already have my old pair and was buying new or had to replace them, I'd go with doubles, but only because the cost difference isn't that great and if I ever sold the bike, they'd be a + over singles.

I've got both. Double and single. Both of them are toshi's. Get a double. Just safety's sake. Don't ever EVER skimp on straps. Specially if you are running brakeless.
Ive skimped on straps before, even though my LBS told me it's a big mistake, I did it anyway and paid for it, in the bad way... Get doubles. Socks |
Doubles and a brake for me.

cheap ass nylon singles (winwood) and a brake. but even when i was brakeless it was the cheap singles and i never had a problem when i adjusted them each time i clipped in.
never tried doubles, never had the money for them. |
Like a lot of others, I run cages with single leather straps and a front brake. Not much skidding going on personally. Only little skips to slow a bit faster without moving my hands from the horns to the brake lever.
|
I skid a lot and honestly I can go both ways or even hold fasts.... I run a brake on my commuter as a last resort.
Doubles tend to have a longer lifespan although more expensive. Singles are easier to get into. Laminated leather straps are the way to go. And like said above do not skimp especially if you go brakeless. Straps not only help with skidding but also backpedaling and regulating speed. |
If you're using slotted cleats a single strap is more than adequate.
If you're doing skids but not using cleats, maybe you need something more. |
singles are fine. hey, go platform if youre not going clipless.

clipless

singles + no brakes have always worked fine for me. Never tried doubles though.

Get something like leader straps or holdfast. They are pretty strong, skids are easy. and lots more comfortable.
With clips, sometimes they just ruin your shoes. =\ |
I have christophe Leather single straps. And toe cages.
I've been skidding a lot more lately since my front brake is being kind of wiley right now (my fault, need to fix it). I wasn't much of a skidder before, but It has always worried me that one of these days I am going to snap one of the straps mid skid and face plant in the middle of the street. |
how you guys running your double toe straps? I've read some people criss crossing them and using them on on single strap cages while others only use double strap cages...
