New chain recommendations?
My izumi eco chain on my commuter has worn out; before I go out for another one, are there any recommendations?
Aiming for quietness and durability (no I do not want the $80 izumi  ). Been thinking of trying a sram chain but not sure of which model... I only have sram components on my ibis mojo... |
i just put on a sram 870 tonight. i had ordered an 890 but the order got mixed up. ive used the old sachs version before sram bought them out and was pleased. i dont see why this one should be any different.

Get the SRAM PC-7X. Great chain for about $20 and very quiet.
Oh, BTW it's 1/8, which is what I assume you have now. Avoid KMC like the plague. |
How does the model hierarchy work for sram chains? All the chains on the sram road site are categorized by the number of gears a bike has and the models in each category share the same description. So do I assume the higher the model number the better? (although I'm going to probably get one from the 8 speed category)

EDIT: I forgot to mention my commuter is still 3/32; it came stock with the paddy wagon and I kept it that way.... although I have some 1/8 spares... |
After wearing out my cheapo Z410 chain, I'm going back to the SRAM PC-1, I liked how quiet it was compared to my Z chain.
It's funny how we all recommended a SRAM chain; I heard the Miche Primato chain is good too. EDIT: Oh, you have a 3/32" drive train, then ditch my idea. |

Totally didn't know that, but nice to hear; I still have a 20+ year old sachs french chain laying around.... its worn of coourse.... EDIT: I forgot to mention my commuter is still 3/32; it came stock with the paddy wagon and I kept it that way.... although I have some 1/8 spares... |
The SRAM 800 series is the 8 speed derailleur chain, and they recommend the PC-1 for single speed as well as 5,6,7 speed geared. I think the reason for this is that the 8-speeds have a quick link connector and are narrower than a normal single speed, so might be considered less reliable.

It is also appearant I should've looked under sram's mountain part of their site aswell.

the first number is the cassette designation and the second two numbers is the "model". for 3/32 get something out of the 8xx lineup. i recommend the 890. its platted on both the inner and outer plates. the 870 they accidently got me is only patted on the outer plates. its really only an aesthetic issue on a ssfg but i will miss my last plated sachs chain (r.i.p.)
