Campagnolo shamal?

So I've seen a couple of fixed bikes on the street with campy shamal wheels/ wheelset... (90's version; purple & black logos on raw polished aluminium)

Just would like to know some more about them from perhaps people who have ridden/ do own a set... more specifically the ride quality of them.

But have been proven to be more aerodynamic than the much-deeper Zipp 404

Good point. Which makes the track equivalent much more harder.... is it possible that people re laced a shamal rim to a track hub?

I would not be surprised

blickblocks 07-18-10 03:57 PM

I heart these rims so much. I wish you could get aluminum rims that deep nowadays.

adriano 07-18-10 04:55 PM

i have the gipiemme copy. these guys thought of bubbled out rims way ahead of the curve.

A teammate of mine races the Gipiemme copy as well (tubular version). It's pretty solid and fast, too.

Yes you can, but you will need a hub with a low spoke whole that is most likely custom ala PW. Can be done, just gets expensive quickly

14 front, 16 rear. Custom phil wood hubs. Single fixed rear. Slotted. Low profile. 2002 shamal rims. Rims were approximately $500 MSRP. NOS. Heavy as **** - 690g/rim. These were the latest version of the rims before the shamal ultras recently (which look nothing alike).

The silver versions were 12 spoke even. Again, those rims nos are floating around (have a pair in the shop). They were a stock campy 8 speed road wheelset type rims.

P.S The rims MUST be laced in their original fashion, meaning radial front and radial left/1x rear. The rims are drilled specifically for this. That means that realistically either the original hubs or beefy hubs designed for radial lacing can be used.

adriano 07-18-10 10:58 PM

thats a waste.

Leukybear 07-18-10 11:06 PM

Wait so the shamal 12 spoke version was road only?

With that bubbled aero profile... or just that deep?

www.hplusson.com
Lighter than the velocity wheels, and come polished too... though low spoke count isn't offered right now (24, 28, 32, 36). 615gram average.

Also, regaurding relacing.... can't you just use a higher hole count hub and skip holes? Assuming radial is ok with the hubs.
14 hole rim to 28hole hub?
16 hole rim to 32hole hub?
