Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

This makes sense. I can buy parts anywhere. A good mechanic IS the LBS. Even if he does ride a Schwinn

A lot of the lower-end Fujis are complete crap and I don't back them at all, so I'd have a really hard time convincing someone to spend their money on one.
I FULLY understand. That's exactly why I don't work in a bike shop anymore.

The Feather isn't a bad bike at all but I can't justify picking one up solely to 'represent'. I always tell them, "Give me a free one and I'll use it to get back and forth to work".

Yeah, but being obsessed doesn't always make your opinions right. It only makes them loud. If you don't believe me, check out talk radio.

I just finished working (pro-bono) on a bike for one of my wife's co-workers. (I don't even do pro-bono bike repairs for my own co-workers.) A previous owner had re-cabeled it and spent extra for rip-cord housings. Then he thought he knew better and used all metal cable housing ends. Not-so-good. One-at-a-time the cable ends were failing and the housings were gradually shortening themselves. I got it because the brakes weren't working (at all) anymore. There was something seriously goofy with the rear brake too. It looked like the canty stud had been cross threaded onto the seat stay and then somehow got bent. I know it didn't come from the factory like that because there were 3 or 4 tiny ball bearings underneath the canty stud.

Sponsorship always goes a long way. I can't imagine a LBS being exclusive in 2010. Marketing & brand perception simply make it impossible for a single bike manufacturer to be the best, coolest or whatever in every category. But by the same token, at the end of the day, any brand name bike is just a frame ? Components comprise the differences. And in some cases, the components are only a perceived difference:

https://www.fujibikes.com/LifeStyle/C...sic-Track.aspx
https://www.fujibikes.com/LifeStyle/C...s/Feather.aspx

Take the Fuji that's being thrown around, Classic Track vs Feather, what's the difference ? The chainwheel and the color, maybe headset ? Because it's certainly not the chain, pedals, seat and whatever else is common. Just from standard issue components, there isn't $ 100 difference between a heavier Feather and a Classic Track from Fuji ? We're talking what color paint goes on it ? Classic is Black, Orange or White, while the Feather is Grey, Pink, Yellow & Blue. I guess my point is you're going to get relative quality from Fuji in both Classic and Feather models & flavors. Personally, I'd save the $ 100 difference and find a way to live with Black, white or orange. Now if they want to throw in choice of Feather colors, I may consider the others ?

I dont like LBSs much anymore... I got spoiled when i was out east. There were 3 shops in town where I used to live, one was the "pro-shop" aka snob central, one was the gritty shop and one was in between the two... I used to hang out at the gritty shop. Used to spend a the whole shift there some days. We (the owner and a few other peeps) would smoke cigs, and listen to classic rock while wrenching our bikes. Cute girls would come by and bring cookies too! I was great! Ever since moving out west here 2 years ago I have yet to find a shop I feel that welcome in. It makes me sad. I am also getting tired of being treated like an idiot as soon as I walk in the door. Each shop here seems like its own clique... I figure, if I cant find a shop like I used to go to I'll just open one myself, HAHAHA!
