Solutions to Krypto Scare

looks like this krypto things for real. my school just put out a bulletin about bikes stolen on campus this way. the dyi fixies have creativity and shiznit so: yo, think up some solutions.

OneTinSloth 09-15-04 11:30 PM

there have already been a number of suggestions brought up in the original thread, but in case you don't feel like wading through like, 20 pages, here's a couple:

kryptonite chain with an American brand padlock
kryptonite chain with the NY3000 disc lock
$2.99/ft "rigger's" chain from hardware store and one of the above locks
locking up with several locks, and several different types of locks (three)
checking out the unbreakable-brand chain lock
getting one of the new disc-style krypto locks when they come out in two weeks.

Here are some videos on how easy it is to pick these locks. I got my NY lock open in about 3 seconds. Scary.

the kryptonite locks have kk- - - - or yse- - - - or nba- - - -
the kk numbers key locks are the ones having the issues apparently.

yse and nba are older models

I got a cheaper U-lock.. still made by Krytonite, but called like cycle-sport or something like that.. and a bic pen will no fit around the inner circle on the lock.

MKRG 09-16-04 09:39 AM

Mine's an NBA and I have no trouble opening it with a pen.

Mine's in the MLB and has been hitting .254 this season. pretty good, eh?

This was posted on the Fixed Gear List...a solution to all the NYC folk.

Today we picked all of the Kryptonite u-locks with round keys using the BIC
pen approach. (Ouch) The NBA and EGH series keys (circa before 08/2002) are
okay. After this date I believe K went to China for the lock mechanism.
Keys numbers beginning with "KK" are definitely vulnerable.

Bicycle Habitat has purchased a bunch of American Padlocks (the kind we us
on our gates) and is making the following special offers to owners of the
NY chain:

Trade in your ev disc lock and we will sell you an American Padlock for
$15.00 or trade in your NY Chain and lock and we will sell you a Master
Lock system for 50.00 This uses a six sided chain like the one on the
Kryptonite forgetaboutit lock, and a shielded padlock. Or trade in your NY
chain and disc lock and we will sell you a NY forgetaboutit 3" chain and
lock for 75.00. Didn't buy your lock at Habitat - Don't worry about we
will still trade!

Feel free to forward this email we need to keep our bikes safe.

Here's a project for one of the graphic artists that rear their ugly head from time to time in these parts. Take the logo below and add "Protected by:" Couple inches in size to fit on the barrel of the lock.

It's ironical.

sf-pdx is right. We should be thinking more creatively about locking our bikes. It's probably not enough any more for us to ride fixed with no breaks. From now on, I will ride fixed with no breaks and no front wheel! It's just one less thing for them to steal anyway. Suckers...

So you'd be riding one of these?
