Cutting bars

Forgive my ignorance but I've never cut bars before and I have some risers I need chopped. What kind of saw/equipment do I need to do this?

Use a pipe cutter.

Yep, pipe cutter or don't bother. They are cheap and simple.

Carbon bars demand a dremel or an aliminium blade (lots of tiny teeth).

I use a hacksaw.

LesterOfPuppets 07-28-10 02:46 PM

I usually go with hacksaw + file(s). Run a piece of tape around the bar as a guide if you want. Or use miter box.

If you gotta buy a tool for the job, go with a pipe cutter and a file. If you have a hacksaw already, pick up a good blade and a file.

pipe cutter, make you life easier. you'll use it on other parts too. steer tube, handle bars, and seat tube.

dsh 07-28-10 03:42 PM

Yeah I've gotten by with just a hacksaw, but my cuts are neither even nor symmetrical.

If you are concerned with having the finished product look respectable at all, I'd go with the pipe cutter.

osiris419 07-28-10 03:49 PM

I used a hack saw, because I couldn't find my pipe cutter, on a set of bars and they looked like ass. Go with a pipe cutter its a much cleaner cut.

LesterOfPuppets 07-28-10 03:53 PM

Hacksaw cuts require some filing afterwards. I even file after cutting with pipecutter.

osiris419 07-28-10 03:57 PM

I know but I was too lazy. The bars were going on a bike I was selling so I really didn't care too much, besides you can't see the ends when there are grips on them.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong but my bars came out deformed last time I used a pipe cutter. The end didn't came out circular...

osiris419 07-28-10 04:08 PM

You might have tightened the cutter too much. If you are using a cutter for larger diameter pipe the clamping force can bend thin steel, like handlebars.

Squirrelli 07-28-10 04:13 PM

Okay, I did it wrong then, I tightened the pipe cutter too much.:P

Shrox 07-28-10 04:37 PM

thanks everyone. My friend has both a pipe cutter and hack saw so I guess I'll just have to decide

Make sure the size is right... I've personally encountered risers that had a larger tubing gauge....
Not a problem for a hacksaw nonetheless.

trust me, just use the pipe cutter, no skill needed, just set it and forget it.
