Switch Hub from Fixed to Free?
 

Hello,

I am looking at getting a 2009 SE DC x PK Ripper - Fixed Gear and want to know if it has a flip flop hub? It doesnt specify but does anyone know? Here is the information from the site.

REAR HUB Chosen High Flange Fixed Alloy, 32H, Japanese Sealed Bearing, Nutted, Sugino Alloy 17T Cog

I am going to try riding it in Fixed Gear but would like to know if the choice exists to change it to free. If not, how much does it typically cost to convert to Flip/Flop Hub?

not sure if it does, but in order to flip it, you must have a rear hub that is compatible for a freewheel on one side. Usually, in the bike description, the Hub specs will say something like "Flip flop / fixed/ freeweel."

As long as it has the proper threading on one side, a freewheel could cost around 20 bucks.

thanks, what if it doesnt have the proper threading. what type of costs am i looking at to make it freewheel compatible?

Well you'll need another hub and that to be rebuilt into your rear wheel; or alternatively and affordably get pre built a flip flop wheel, perhaps a kilo tt wheel from somebody's deep V upgrade? Or even a stripped cog side kilo tt rear wheel for even cheaper? (kilo TT's come with a flip flop threaded hub)

You could sell your deepv's on craigslist for 175 and buy a decent cxp22/formula set from velomine for a bit more than 100 bucks.

You're safe. Most SS/FG's have the flip flop hub, few don't have the freewheel installed. To me any SS/FG should come standard with flip flop hub, both freewheel and fixed gear with front and rear brakes. Let the buyer determine what mode and whether brakes stay on it ?

The threading is the same. You can install freewheels on "fixed-only" hubs without any issues.

thanks for all of the help guys. it sounds like i should be fine to get the bike then if i dont like the fixed gear ride, then i can switch it to free wheel pretty easily (and inexpensively).

and fuji - that is the 2010 version (and the orange is a little showy for me). the one i am looking at is a black 2009.

thanks man. i was confused bc the 2010 says "Fixed/Free" and the 2009 says "Fixed".

I actually just got this same bike off my friend, how would I go upon converting it to single speed

Undo the lock ring (reverse threaded), undo the fixed cog. Thread on a freewheel.

and make sure you have brakes.
