Rear brakes are unnecessary on fixed gear bikes and only necessary under certain conditions on bikes with freewheels.

This is one of the few areas I disagree with Sheldon on. If you get your butt off the saddle and over the rear tire, you can get quite a bit of additional braking power from your rear wheel.

If you're biting it when you lock up your rear tire, you need more practice. I locked up my rear wheel on the way home today when someone with their left turn signal turned right into a driveway all of the sudden. I just moved back a little and skidding ceased.

I agree with your disagreement.

I also disagree with SB on the need for a rear brake. On a motorcycle the front brake is 75 % of the stopping power, the other 25 % could save you or another some pain. Same goes with a bicycle. I've come down bridges that both brakes were necessary just to slow down even. And yes, by all means use the fixed gear to assist in braking too. When you look at the extra cost, most throw in free brakes (BD), so why not 2, front & rear ? If you rarely/never use the rear, it can be a spare as it's the same piece of hardware and put on the front if you ever need to do that.

I'm well aware, but what looks goofier, a rear brake or a dummy hood? Not to mention, those dummy's cost an outrageous amount considering they do less than a normal brake lever.

Best "dummy lever": http://www.nashbar.com/bikes//Catalo...erm=stronghold

Outrageous amount?

I just get cheap road levers and don't run a cable to one. Last set was like $20.

If you want to be a badass take off the front brake and install a rear one on your seatpost.

It meant that I ordered a Kilo TT Pro.... was just trying to avoid a bike specific or BD specific thread, as that was not really relevant to me question.
