Simple Green. Cheap at the hardware store and safe on every part of the bike and works amazing.

I degrease with wd40. (buy a gallon jug, use your own spray bottle). It's similar to kerosene in respects.

I thought that simple green would etch aluminum parts? From what I remember it was fine to use it to wipe stuff down but not for soaking. Or was that just the version from my childhood their no longer allowed to sell?

kerosene is pretty close to winter diesel......I have used simple green with good results in my ultrasonic cleaner but then I have also had good results with cheap vodka which is what I clean my skateboard bearings with

Brake cleaner, grease and oil come off like it was nothing. And it does not leave any residue, it's cheap too.

I have a gallon jug of mineral spirits sitting around that I've been using for a long time now, works fast, doesn't seem to ruin plastic or painted parts, and AFAIK is pretty cheap.

Cheers
