Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated! As I said, it's a pain but definitely possible. Not to mention all that can be learned (this s my first ground-up build) in the process. And for the record, I left the rear that way to hopefully rig up a non-permanent rack mount system. Probably will take off the other rear brake routing in the future.

Alexrobots 08-18-10 10:00 PM

i pmed you coma

coma061 08-19-10 12:45 AM

^ Not being a jerk, just saw the pm while checkng stuff out on my phone, already in bed!

Hey, what better way to learn about a bike than actually working on it? Just make sure you are prepared for the money you'll spend. Let us know how it goes!

I say go for it OP. I had a hybrid with vertical drops, i decided to turn it into a single speed.

twas a total pain in my butt, however i learned a lot from it. i now know how to pretty much do every bike repaid needed for a bike.

Alexrobots 08-23-10 08:08 PM

i know i need a special tool to get the crank off but is there a way i can get it off with house hold tools ?

Squirrelli 08-23-10 08:11 PM

Don't try to pry it off with a crow bar, you'll damage it. Just go to a bike co-op(BikeKitchen and the like) and ask them nicely if you could use their crank puller really quickly. Most of them will have no problem if you use it for like 3 seconds.

Alexrobots 08-23-10 08:17 PM

gotcha thanks

With vertical dropouts there are fewer options when trying to make a mtb fixed. If you don't go with an eno hub you will need to find the magic gear so the chain tension will be good. Halflinks are abig help as is using a quickrelease setup. This will give a few mm of movement for the axle in the rear dropout. Also read this page, after the section on ENO hubs. I used the drastic method, worked fine.

As far as hubs, cranks etc. You don't need a new b/b or crank for a s/s or fixed mtb. I have done it on a mtb triple before on the middle ring. If the wheel you have already is a decent wheel and in good shape keep it and get a surly fixxer. People will tell you it is pricey, but they aren't trying to find a fixed gear wheel thats 26inch rim with a 135mm hub (A 120mm hub spaced to 135 will not work on a mtb with 135 spaced droupouts. A 130mm will but the chainline is a few mm off. If you are using the stock crank you will need a 135 hub). My fixxer was $80, cog and ring another $25. My surly hub, rim, spokes, nipples, cog and ring cost me $220+ at lbs cost with labour cost of 12 moosehead. Now that wheel is 4 years old and has never been trued after close to 30 000km, but you will have to ask yourself is it worth that type of coin for a beater project bike.I lucked out on my other wheelset and got the last 26inch fixed set from bikeisland 2 years ago for $120.
Get the fixxer.

It is much harder to do with vertical dropouts, but possible. My first fixed mtb was done this way, fixxer, original crank and bb, ground the droupouts out, added a halflink and cut the axle. Never had the fixxer or qr slip.

I decided to convert my mountain bike into a single speed after the rear derailleur broke. What I did was take the cassette apart and tried different cogs until I found the "magic ratio", which is 42/16. I used the spacers from two cassettes (and one cog) to get the correct chainline. I don't ride it too often but I haven't had any problems yet.

I only spent a couple dollars on a bottom bracket spacer to replace the e-type derailleur.

So I'm taking the paint off with a drill that has a wire brush attach ment and it's taking it off so tommorow I should paint it and I'll post pics

ever heard of paint stripper?

Alexrobots 08-24-10 10:42 PM

Well I talked to guy at bike of America he said to do it the way I am .

dbwoi 08-25-10 01:54 AM

Not to be rude, but it sounds like you don't really know what you're doing. That being said, you seems surprisingly determined to get this done, one way or another. Just be wary when buying parts, because it seems like you buy without much foresight. Good luck with painting, make sure to prime it too. I'm currently in the process of painting my bike, I know how much of a hassle it is. Good luck with the project, just don't rush into it (although it may be too late for that.)

This is a prime example of why I visit the SSFG forum.
