wrapping bar tape?

just wrapped up my bars today as the old tape was getting pretty ratty. but i noticed that as i wrapped i continually got less and less satisfied with the job i was doing. so i rewrapped and rewrapped until it was perfect. just wanting to know if any of you guys were this ocd about wrapping your bars or if its just me

Aaron_F 08-16-10 07:34 PM

Yep, I pretty much want it to be perfect.

hairnet 08-16-10 07:35 PM

i have rewrapped my bars waaaayyyyy too many times. I'm good at it but I always notice some small imperfection and it ticks me off

Squirrelli 08-16-10 07:37 PM

I love wrapping bars, it's one of those things I wouldn't mind doing it over and over and over til it is perfect.

devin3294 08-16-10 07:46 PM

yeah i like wrapping them but if i mess up its really annoying

rustybrown 08-16-10 07:54 PM

OCD halfway through each side. It usually looks horrible after the bend close to the stem.

Deshi 08-16-10 07:56 PM

Has to be perfect....hahaha. I like it to look good but most tape looks like ass after a week anyway so I get it close and call it good.

Same here...

Great minds, rusty, great minds.

Not ocd at all. I just wrap it, and forget it.

squeegeesunny 08-16-10 08:02 PM

New vision stem btw. 70mm > 90mm :D :D

I love a good wrap. It going to on there a while, so it pays to do it right.

Whenever I see sloppy bar wrap I wonder what else is wrong with the bike.

cZa 08-16-10 08:08 PM

Sorry I have to much add to spend that long on wrap and I find no reason to devote so much time to it. I should problly use track grips or something. but I assure everything else is kept in fine order.

wrapped my first bar today. fun. bright blue tape looks interesting on a clay colored langster.

yummygooey 08-16-10 09:49 PM

I wrapped my bullhorns 2-4x per side. Took forever.

i'm a tennis player and i grip my racquets on a regular basis and it really has to be perfect. same thing applies to the handlebars. i don't have to keep redoing it though i'm pretty pro at it from tennis.

avner 08-16-10 10:23 PM

I rewrapped my handle bars 4 times total. First time I didn't like the look, second time I noticed I wrapped one side going the wrong way. Third time I felt i didnt make it thick enough in some places and too thick in others. Fourth time I realized I didnt wrap the brake cable from my TT lever in at the right angle.

All this and I intend to replace the tape anyway :/

Tomo_Ishi 08-17-10 12:18 AM

Do the cotton tapes, you can pretty much keep rewrapping those till you rip em by other means. You get to do some Harlequin-taping while at it.

The same for me. Wrapping bullhorns or drops is a little more complex than a racquet, but the technique is similar.

The base of the racquet handle is the worst, I'd rather tape drops than a raquet any day.

I like mine to be nice and clean looking. I really enjoy wrapping my bars though, and have done it quite a few times more than I should :D

c0urt 08-18-10 01:06 PM

I like them to be right,

dbwoi 08-18-10 01:40 PM

I rewrapped my bars 10 times on each side at least until it was perfect. I am completely OCD when it comes to wrapping. In my book, if it isn't perfect, its ****.

im super crazy OCD with my barwrap. and i actually really enjoy doing it for some reason....here is my first fixed gear build that is sort of my canvas for trying out new things to see how i like them...
lol the bars have 3 types of tapes on them. WHY??? something involving creativity and mental instability with a dash of boredom :D

actually this came about because i really wanted brooks leather tape, but didn't want to shell out 80 dollars for it. luckily my roommate did lol, and even more lucky was the fact he only needed one of the two provided rolls to wrap his bars. For a dinner and a few extra turns at washing the dishes he gave me the other roll.....which i cut in half, one half for each side. wrapping the bullhorns, the brooks wrap got to where you can see it. i then picked up some wierd 80's white vinyl wrap from some long defunct japanese manufacturer for the bullhorn ends. the actual bullhorns are white, which i liked the look of, but wanted some grip. i then used some black cloth tape and created what i guess you could call nubs....wrapped around a few times to be slightly thicker than the rest, i like it like that for my hands. i then used shellac on the black cloth tape to darken the color and cement the tape in place a bit.

LOL i love me some bar wrap ^_^

it's all about the right angle and the right tension. otherwise you get a stupid overlapping crease thing.
