Well, I moved to Munich, which is the beer capitol of germany if not the world. There are some really great regional brews here. If anybody can get Augustiner Brau, that is by far the most popular brew here. And since Oktoberfest is in full swing, you can find their oktoberfest beer which also is extraordinary. Also the Franziskaner Weissbier Dunkle is really great. Spaten and Paulaner also good, but I prefer Augustiner. BTW, the beer here comes in 2 sizes. normal (1 liter), and small (pint). I can't wait to try the beer from the rest of Germany!

Also I love my new Viner track bike. The german pronounciation is pretty close to wiener, so that's what I'm calling it from now on, my wiener.

i'm normally a Guinness man, with occasional forays into Newcastle or Yeungling's B&T territory if the keg runs dry. unfortunately, my financial status right now puts me on a PBR/High Life budget. or i could stop drinking (but that's just effin crazy).

I vote (with carpediem) for Victory Hop Devil and Stone Ruination.

The selections from Avery Brewing Company are in my current rotation.

so beer is the best.

with red meat...samuel smith's oatmeal stout, by far the best complement.

with white meat...1/2 red tail ale + 1/2 old foghorn barleywine, heavy enough on the taste buds to spark up the next bite.

with seafood...leffe belgian ale or edelweiss dunkel

but for the everyday fix you'll never go wrong with a guinness.

whatever - you have the tolerance of a flea! You should make an altar to cheap beer. Hell, you could get wasted off Kaliber.

There's a bar in DC called Brickskeller that serves it. Even though the bar is pretty cheese, it's worth it for the Augustiner.

whats with Pabst being the official drink of track/FG? I heard of an alleycat in LA where they sponsored the event and donated something like 8 cases of beer...

Wow. 8 cases of Pabst. The brewery must have been feeling generous to shell out that kind of dough. It must have cost them about 3 bucks including the deposit on the cans.

There is a pretty cool music club in town that has PBR on tap at the bar. $2 a pint and $1.50 when it is on special. The also have a dozen more beers including Ephemere from Unibroue (a green apple dessert beer). Needless to say, a pretty diverse selection.

Boss Hogg,
Those are the brews I used to drink when I was a poor college student. Now I'm still poor but I have higher standards. Has something change with those brews in the last 10 years? Reminds me of the day when one could a six pack of Mickey's BIG MOUTH Stingers for $3… Good Times, Good Times.

*new*guy 09-23-04 11:21 AM

mickey's BM's have always been good to me. Something about the brew... perhaps the saltiness of it:p

PBR sponsors bull riding. When it was my goal to get drunk on the cheap, Busch was always my fave.

is there really a "pabst brewery"? my understanding is that it's just a label owned by a company; the beer could be made anywhere. i knew a guy who grew up in sheboygan (wi) and he told me about his first job at the local heileman's brewery. on his first day he was working the label machine, and the foreman told him that at 4:00 he was supposed to load a different brand's labels into the machine. my friend looked out at the endless line of bottles on their way to the labeling machine and said "how will i know when the different brand gets here" and the foreman said "oh don't worry they got a computer takes care of everything for ya". so when someone says "geez all those cheap beers taste the same to me" they might not be hallucinating.

of course if you love drinking pbr you should keep drinking it, because it's good to drink a beer that you love. there is a beer that i love to drink: bell's oberon, a summer ale from michigan. mmmmmm...

danielmolloy 09-23-04 01:00 PM

Oh, it's the perfect size. People tell me all the time how cool it is. And it's even better after drinking a couple of Mass's at Oktoberfest. BTW, we're having an alleycat for the Oktoberfest this weekend, so if anybody is interested, it should be a ton of fun. I think we'll even drink some beer.

Pabst is just a label owned by Miller. I think Miller has been bought by a South African company. Back in the day, Pabst, Schlitz, G.L. Heileman, Miller, Stroh et al, were all individual companies. At some point Heileman was bought out by Stroh and then Stroh was bought by Pabst. Eventually, Miller bought Pabst. From what I understand, PBR is brewed in San Antonio (San Antonio!...Get a rope), and it is brewed under the Miller name. If you get a keg of PBR is will say "Miller Brewing Company." The history is basically true; it is hard to keep the chronology of who bought what and when. I'm a bit fuzzy on it b/c it was told to me by a bar tender in Milwaukee. My whole trip to Milwaukee is fuzzy. That is one drunk town. I loved it.

Regardless, I drink PBR b/c I've been drinking it since high school. I've been drinking it since high school b/c it is ****off good. Furthermore, PBR = the People's Beer for the Revolution!

see down here in good ole richmond va. there seems to be a general theme, i don't follow it, but many seem to do so..."dress wealthy, drink cheap" so there's pbr everywhere...we've nicknamed it pbr = Punk Beer of Richmond...but then again, that kinda makes us seem lame
