the guy i work for is really sick and he cant ride bikes anymore so he gave me his brooks professional saddle with brass studs and copper rails, its a bit dirty just from being in his garage so i used toothpaste on the brass studs and it came out real nice but i was wondering if it would be that bad to use it on the leather? i dont have a way of getting saddle soap for a while

You can't get a leather boot/shoe polish at a store close by?

yeah... toothpaste is too abrasive. maybe try hand lotion? it will remove some dirt and condition the leather. try in an inconspicuous area if you can because it may darken the leather.

:0000 It's a Brooks saddle...****. Do not use toothpaste. Haha. A $10 bottle of leather polish is nothing at all to keep a $150 saddle ship-shape.

Err I use brook's proofide for my brooks saddle.... but I think there is a cheaper alternative which is shared here at the forum but I forgot... would I be correct to assume it regular shoe polish close to the color of your saddle....

I wouldn't put a Kiwi style shoe polish on my saddle as I think the wax in there would dry the leather out and stain the heck out of whatever you sit on that seat wearing.

I have been using Obenauf's Heavy Duty Leather Preservative on my saddle. It isn't the same stuff as Brooks Proofide, but I have been using it for the past several months [which has been 2-3 applications] and it hasn't caused the leather to stretch or lose its shape or anything awful. Heck of a lot cheaper. I am not recommending this, just because I can't guess what will happen to this saddle in 5 or 10 years.

EDIT: Just typing this up made me want to see if anyone else has tried this. Apparently I am not the only one. Rivendell Bike Works sells this same stuff as "saddle goop" and they write that they prefer it to Brooks Proofide. To be honest, the only reason I used this is because my Proofide was more difficult to open. On ebay, $12 or so gets you 8 oz - which has taken care of saddle, boots, belts, wallets, etc for a couple of years or so for me and there is still plenty [3/4 of the stuff] left in the tub.

Are you being serious??? Toothpaste on a Brooks Saddle? I can't think of any reason why you would do this. Do you wash your shoes with toothpaste as well?
