Fixed gear mountain bike?
So I want to give a fixed gear bike a try, but besides being super poor I don't have a lot of room for multiple bikes. If I already have a single speed mountain bike like a Dawes Deadeye from bikes direct, how hard would it be to make it a fixed gear bike? Is it more complex than just changing the chain ring and adding a correct cog and lockring?
Thanks. |
Well it doesn't say that it's a flip flop hub so i'd assume it's just freewheel. Changing the chainring would just change the gearing. You would probably need a fixed hub. You would also need the cog and lockring.
Have you checked out the Motobecane Outcast? http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...tcast29_08.htm That already comes with the flip flop rear hub so you can do fixed or freewheel. |
If it's already a single speed, making it fixed gear shouldn't be too hard. Could you post a pic of your rear wheel/hub?

The Dawes Deadeye has a single speed, disk ready cassette hub. What this means is you cannot simply add a track cog and lockring. The hub has no provision for that.
However, you can use the disk mounts to attach a Tomicog and Tada, you have a fixed gear mountain bike. |
^ What he said.

That tomicog is looking perfect! Thanks for the help guys.
