my crank.....fell off
 

10 miles into a ride...first ride on it. assembled by evans cycle in the UK before shipping, then rechecked everything on the bike for tightness (not correct assembly, so that could have been it) and it happened. accelerating from a light and halfway to speed me left foot just drops

I wouldn't be yay even if they gave me a crank worth as much as the rest of the bike! I'd be letting them know they need to watch who they hire as mechanics and to make them go through cycling mechanic school.

Same thing happened to me on a new Trek.

Do you mean it was the wrong crank assembly, as in wrong part?

What about your bottom bracket??

could have been assembled wrong. like maybe a dab of locktite shoudl have been used on the cover screw or something?

my theory on it is this. The cap screw appears to hold the crank onto the arm. the crank bolts for hte arm just hold it from wobbling on the BB. said cover came loose, and the crank arm worked its way off, then just sheared off like that. the BB is an external type, as this is a 2 piece crank, with the shaft integrated on the fuji track pro. so the new crank will have the entire assembly and ill just swap it out in a few seconds.
anyways, they are GREATLY compensating me for this incident, enough so, that im willing to overlook this situation and just smile lol

anytime ANYTHING goes through the mail... baggage handlers... friends houses... someone else's car...

anytime anyone but a cyclist handles or has possession of a bike i ride, i give it the instant once over inspection.


not saying its your fault... it should have been assembled properly and no one should have messed with it in transit... but to ride it without properly torquing everything down and making sure assembly was up to snuff... i'm just saying, you could have prevented it.

nice that they're taking care of you though... especially if it's not just some cheap crap like the usual mail order sites' products.

that spindle design really begs for a discerning install... it's not like a square taper where you just muscle the **** out of it... you have to be sure you're getting everything in order, THEN putting the work on.

yeah. well like i said i did a once over on the TQ of everything, but i didnt dissasemble stuff to make sure proper additives were there. that is what i think they missed. a dab of locktite on assy could have prevented that cap from comming off. I did a short maybe 2 mile ride when i got hte bike, and checked TQ after that too on everything with no movement. so it was prolly the bad roads vibrating enough to work it loose or something? Im beginning to think a fuji track pro as a commuter may not have been the best idea bwahahaa lol.

anyways, got some 105 clipless pedals, pair of decent headlights, and a sack o intertubes for free along with new fizik bartape and a crankset for free. so Evans cycles has my blessing and ill buy more from them. especially since its 3 days shipping time from the UK to saudi arabia. thats better than i get in america!

No. The big cap on the end of the spindle is only used to set the bearing preload. The two pinch bolts clamp the splines down and hold everything together. Same principle as a threadless stem. The crank's not going anywhere if the bolts are tightened properly.

If you swap it out "in seconds," just make sure you do it right, eh?

with the arms tq ~110inlbs(yes i have a tq wrench) it made its way off.....explain that one. and hte crank arm bolts had locktite on em.

when i say i went over hte bike to make sure its all tight, i didnt just take a 3" hex key over it. Im a jet engine mechanic...im pretty picky

and yes. after further research on park tools, you are correct aobut the cap for just preload. so i guess there should be no reason it came of except for a defective product since everything was tightened correctly

my bike was also a demo bike, not new. so thats part of it as well. they didnt tell me it was a demo bike when i ordered, or prior to shipping. no big deal. they are the best customer service ive ever had

They sold you a used product as new? I don't think I'll be making any orders from there in the future.

they made VERY good on it in my eyes. i got more back than i woudl have gotten off it, and i ONLY paid 1050.00 USD for a 2010 fuji track pro....so yeah. overall im satisfied.
