Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I don't know what's disgusting about it. A kid likes bikes and wants to look like her parents. Get over it.

They are 8 and this kid bring a $3000 bike to race other 8 years old with their cute little bikes. The other kids just want to have fun and she comes with her aero helmet and full kit, tries to leave everyone in the dust...sure being competitive is a good thing but come on...

EDIT:Exactly what CardiacKid said.

I think the point Vixtor was trying to make is at that age it should be about the engine, not how much money Daddy has. It reminds me of the kid that shows up at the Pinewood Derby with a car that Daddy spent 100 hours building.

I really, really mean this. It's not your business what people do with their money and for their children.

By the way, the wheels are $3,500. The Dura Ace DI2 Electronic Shifting system is another $3,000.

But don't let me disrupt your hatin'.

That will be very unfortunate for him, since he will have issues. Unlike all the other kids, who will all grow up to have no issues at all. Because normal people, on average, never have issues.

How is that even necessary for a 8 year old? She is probably going to grow out of it in a couple of months.

It is definitely the business of the parents of the other kids in the race. You either don't have kids or are the parent of that kid in the picture.

Bike Geek + Fatherhood.

How many dudes make awesome bikes for their girlfriends, when the girls don't know Dura Ace from Jack in the Box?

For all we know, the guy works for Lightweight and got the parts for free. Like someone else in another thread wrote, maybe the kid has some illness and wants to be a "Pro bike racer" before it's too late and the companies donated the parts.

Actually, I have a 10 year old son who plays baseball and football (two sports with some expensive equipment).

It's envy that makes you guys sick in your stomach to see this. A real bike geek would be all excited to see such a project pulled off.

for me it's not envy. it's just thinking about how the other kids and their parents must feel.

I see where you are coming from, shouldn't have judge by just looking at one picture...

It's not even envy, I just think that it is so discouraging to the other kids, they obviously just want to have a blast out there, winning is just a bonus for them and the fancy bike is not going to make them feel any better.

I'm a parent, and I don't feel anything but, "Whoa! Awesome!" I see plenty of kids that look like Reggie Bush and A-Rod playing against my son and I don't think that they have any advantage over him. Being a parent, I know that the kids probably wanted that gear and probably earned it through chores and/or birthday wishes. Gear does not give an 8 year old any advantage over the next. Actually, how early or late your birthday falls in the year is a better predictor of success in youth sports than equipment.

Dude, they are just little kids. It's gonna be a cute race and this kid dressed the part.

I took it a little too serious...and made a fuss about it. I'm not a parent yet so I don't know...

But that little bike seems like an awesome project but expensive.
