Built a tarcky SS for the GF. Discuss.

Figured I'd make a thread for this SS I built for my gf's bday back in Mar. Took me 6mos. to get it all together, and blew my budget, as it's impossible not to do with nearly any build. Yeah I know, it's tarck as f*ck...lol. I wanted it to be matchy-matchy, but not gaudy/tacky. It was built for her so I had to make sure it was pretty and she'd like it!

My plan worked though, since she rode it about as much as I could've hoped over the past 6mos. By that I don't mean "alot," but much more than just a couple times. It inspired 5 of her girlfriends to buy bikes, although they went with some wack entry-level hybrid mtb things. Anyways, they did several long rides together, and she's even used it for errands like going down the street with a backpack to pickup groceries or to a cafe for brunch. I'm just glad I got her back into biking, and plan to build her a full suspension mtb at some point. That's gonna cost way more though.

Later on I also got her a semi-burly combo cable lock, compact pump, small saddle bag, and helmet. Oh, and lots of lecturing about how to properly lock the bike, not ever leaving it unlocked, keeping it within sight as much as possible, etc... I don't think you can ever be too paranoid, especially with a bike that doesn't blend in.

Here's the build:
Frameset: 80's Shogun frame rattlecanned satin white
Wheelset: Weinmann DP18 all white, machined sidewalls
Tires: Forte Gotham 700x35
Hubs: Formula
Crankset: Origin 8 46t 1/8" anodized purple
Chain: KMC 1/8" purple
Freewheel: ACS 20t 1/8"
Bars: Origin 8 anodized purple risers
Grips: Oury purple
Stem: Nitto silver quill
Saddle: Iscaselle NOS white
Seatpost: Kalloy Uno anodized purple
Brakes: Tektro R365 nutted
Brake Levers: Odyssey NOS BMX anodized purple

Love it? Hate it? Built a bike for your gf that she didn't ride, or you kept after the breakup? Discuss...

Oh yeah, that. Snapped the pic before adjusting chain tension and re-torquing everything

Now that I think about it, she might've actually logged more mi. on her SS than I did on my FG this summer. I built 4 DH/FR bikes this summer and have been playing in the dirt as much as possible.

Good gesture, but I'm not a fan of the color combo, or rather, the product that is being presented. The white is just too dominant.

Holy hell, what is the gear ratio, the rear cog looks huge. 46x20?

Also, not a huge fan of the color combo, I agree that there is too much white. But as long as she likes it and rides it then that's what matters.

i think it would look better with a black saddle, chain, and grips (but im not your girl)

i built my girlfriend a road bike this summer and she rode i a fair amount. she actually asked if i would help her build a cheap conversion for riding/locking up in the city.

Personally I'm not a fan of the colors, but I am a fan of people riding bikes, and it looks like a nice build. Plus I'm not a girl, so what do I know?

Here is my girlfriends SS Mixte conversion townie. Again, I don't like the colors too much, but she likes it and rides it daily.

I guess the colors are kind of tarcky.

Thanks, and I think the entire build cost less than $80. Pretty happy with it. It needs some new paint though.

It's basically a ghost bike, sans white tires b/c I'm not a fan of colored tires, and some color in the form of anodized parts (not painted) since the finish is so much more durable and easier to maintain. Not that it really matters, but although I wouldn't build mine exactly like that, I love how it looks for a woman's bike. I know if I saw a chick riding this thing, it would add a point for sure.

Just like it says in the first post. She's like 5'3" 110-120 I think, so no 80 GI here lol.

Originally I wanted to build her a Mixte, because standover just isn't an issue. It was a PITA finding a small enough frame with a perfectly horizontal tt while running 700c. Unfotunately she hated the style. She likes shiet like arrospokks and celeste, so I had to kill ideas like that. Wish I could've built it for $80 too! Went brand new on everything except the frame, stem, and soon-to-be-replaced bb and pedals.

Haha, no disrepsect towards the Gear ratio, I was just curious what she was running.

My girlfriend is kind of the opposite, isn't into risers and aerospokes and stuff.
