SingleSpeed Build questions

I just picked up an 86-87 Bianchi frame that I would like to build into a single speed for my girlfriend.

I have never built a bicycle before but I would really like to learn.

I know there are tons and tons of things that go into building one and i'm prepared to spend several weeks/months building this.

I think it will be a good learning experience for me.

I already plan on buying the following:

drop handlebars/ road handle bars

seat

wheels

pedals

crank

etc.

I guess my main question is do I need to buy any specific parts to make this a single speed?

Or can i just throw anything on there and hope it works?

I know those questions may sound dumb. I'm just trying to make sure that I learn the right way the first time

Any information would be greatly appreciated

it won't take you several months. i just did it, and it's not rocket science. just don't be afraid of it. here's the thread for the build i'm working on, which is more complex than the SS you're building: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?680528

if the frame doesn't have a bottom bracket already installed, find out the width & threading of your bottom bracket. that will be something like 68mm, and it's either "english" (non-drive side is reverse threaded) or "italian" (regular threaded both sides).

Check out a build kit, maybe? http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?...ajor=8&minor=2

The only thing that will have to be different is the back wheel(or if youre building your own wheels, the rear hub) You will also probably have to get an odd sized bottom bracket spindle legnth. And a lot of people like the looks of single speed cranks over standard double ones, but thats not a nessisary one.
