Fixed Gear Bicycle Shops in Baltimore MD or DC

Anyone know of some Bicycle Shops around the Baltimore Maryland and or Washington DC area that have a supply of Fixed Gear and SingleSpeed parts, tools, etc. . .

If not this area maybe some "quick" shipping, "reliable" internet suppliers. . .

College Park Bikes in College Park, MD is where I got my Fuji. Also, City Bikes in Adams Morgan (http://citybikes.com/site/intro.cfm) is quite popular. I don't know about Baltimore.

City Bikes in Adams Morgan has a bit of stuff. They also have a staff who knows what it all is because they ride fixed.

revolution in georgetown has some stuff as well.

As far as stocking stuff, most don't have fixed stuff. But, I know the owner of Fleet Street Cycles in Canton and was talking to him recently about doing that. He'll order you stuff and he's seeing more people come in asking. He should have some SS stuff like freewheels and chainrings. I'll email him a reminder and some suggestions about stocking.

If you are north of B-more go to the Perry Hall Performance (yes, you read that right). The head of the service dept. is a fixed gear nut so he'll know what you want.

West of B-more you can check Princeton Sports in Columbia, I know one of the shop guys is a fixed gear/SS rider.

Oh, one more thing, for a place that has good stock - I mean actually there in the store - check College Park bikes.

I called Fleet Street Cycles. They seem "knowledgeable" and willing to order what I need. I mentioned you (riderX) and they know you. I hope that is ok with you? My intention was that they may give you a future discount?

Thank You,

Jim

I wish to thank everyone for the quick replies. . . All the shops are on the mark and are places I haven't been to yet.

Thank You. . .

Jim

Don't forget Chain Reaction in DC, which will order stuff for you but also sells cheapie used parts-- nice.

And I have to add my two cents about bike shops-- f*ck city bikes. with few exceptions, the staff is unfriendly, the prices are too high, and i feel like unless you're "hardcore" enough you won't have a good experience.

I prefer Capitol Hill bikes on 8th St SE. In fact, I live 3 mi from Cap Hill bikes and 3 blocks from City Bikes, but I'll ride to Cap Hill bikes any day.

No problem, I was going to tell you to mention my name (forgot to post that).

maybe in chevy chase, i've never been, but the folks at adams morgan are nice and accomodating. the mechs can be be no non-sense but they're not elitist. last i heard, they're building up their fixie section. otherwise it's sparse.

modmon 09-29-04 11:41 PM

yeah, the guys at fleet street know the score. being a smaller shop, they tend to be less busy and have the time to help you out, and will point you in the right direction even if its at another bike shop.
ive heard broadway bicycles has a mechanic that is well versed in fixies but i tend to stay out of there cuz it tends to be congested and the other help there needs to get a clue sometimes. but i guess they did get voted best bike shop in baltimore by the CP this year...
heard good things about mt washington bikes (joes bike shop) but i dont go out that way much. their prices seemed high but everyone there seems to know what their talking about.
i tend to stay out of light street cycles. generally a good shop but ive left there annoyed more than a few times. read: Hurry up and Buy!
last but not least, the staff at Bike Doctor in Linthicum have been really good to me. wasnt expecting that from a franchise bike shop.

I know of Broadway Bicycles. It is a great shop and the mechanic you speak of is Michael and he appears young but is knowledgeable beyond his years and very helpful. All the mechanics are excellent and helpful. The shop owner Roger will go to no end to get what you want if possible. As you stated the shop is very busy at times and patience is required.

Anyway I was hoping to find a shop with lots of Fixed and SingleSpeed parts on hand. But the reality is that they must supply the general cyclist to remain in business and the elitist cyclist usually will need to order parts and wait. Online is not any better as many times the items are displayed on the web page but not in stock. Ebay is a game of chance at times. I have recently ordered some items and the Guy in charge was called away on family matters and left the shipping to his girl friend. His girl friend mixed several orders and the whereabouts of the items and other's items are unknown as of two weeks later. So the guy decided to just cancel the mixed up orders and refund the money. Very Frustrating - I may be venting here? ;)

Yes, Jeff (owner) of Bike Doctor Linthincum is a good guy and should have been on my initial list - my haste in answering left him off. He is very active in local trail maintenance - I was out with him the other day surveying where we will be doing this fall's work at Patapsco. FYI - Bike Doctor is a local franchise with independently owned stores. The guy who started them did it so a collection of shops could get better buying power.

the guy who owns college park bike, although they do have a pretty nice selection of frames and what not, is the most pompous jerk ive ever had to deal with. if you know what you like and see it there for a good price, GET IT, but if your thinking of asking questions be prepared to get blown off and look like an idiot.

I've been in there a few times and never had a problem.

Just another data point.
