Can i see some toe clip and strap(s) setup? Mid-range suggestions?

I had my Shimano SPDs on my SS since i got it but switched to platforms for a more commuter friendly setup. Anyhow, im just running the cheap pedals/clips that came with my Dawes SST AL, they feel ok but i dont think im getting a very good representation of a decent setup. The toe clip itself is fine, but the straps are flimsy and platforms create pressure points.

Anyhow, no point in posting $100+ pedal setups, im more concerned with the mid range.

I'd really like to see each poster's pictures of their setup or suggestions with links and/or images.

Thanks in advance

GR-9's - Quintessential urban pedal, perfect for street shoes. Add longer M5 bolts from the hardware store for double-strap pwnage

Wabi Double Straps - Laminated for zero stretch, supah cheap.

No pictures, but you can Google, yeah?

gr-9 is my favorite platform pedal. Unless you are riding brakeless, you will probably be just fine w/ some single clips and a single nylon straps. Probably get this setup for about $50

xavier853 10-04-10 09:24 PM

try more like 30

mks single clips with generic leather strap.

another vote for the gs 9s. they are very comfortable to ride with. so far the longest ride ive done with them is seventy miles.

i like the look of the GR9 but wouldnt mind some sealed pedals... i realize its not a mtn bike but i had some annoying problems with the non-sealed. Do i suck at searching or is there not a sealed version?

+1

mks touring or sealed mtb platforms, cheep plastic cages, pace straps

gr-9 are so narrow, like pedals about the wide of my shoes, feels like i can keep the straps tighter

I have basic all-city standard track pedals, mks steel toe clips, and a single basic nylon strap.

pedals
clips

I'm pretty happy with this setup.

I m good with Sylvan Track. Not too good with my shoes compared to GR-9, but they work better for me, the wide-foot. Kinda getting tired of GR-9 lately and I kinda like the feel of these old-style cages. (Not that they are better or anything)

To be honest, given the pedals got slots for straps and protrusions at rear end for flipping, I think any pedals are fine in terms of performance. Repacking pedal bearings (or any bearing for that matter) is something I don't wanna do too often. I wish my pedals had grease channels like SpeedPlay pedals. Only one that have grease channels are Tioga Surefoot 6, but those are kinda rare these days and only work with single-straps. ... Nothing is too perfect, I suppose.

Agreed. Gr-9s are way too narrow for my feet. They look cool though.

I'm feeling this way too lately. I loved my GR-9s at first because they eliminate the hot spots I'd get with my Sylvans but they're a touch too narrow for my platypus flippers.

terrydactyl 10-07-10 12:02 PM

i have some hold-fast straps i use on my steamroller. love them.

MKS GR-9s with MKS steel clips and generic leather straps. I have small feet, so the width is fine for me.

I also like the fact that the flip tab on the back is huge.

I wear size 9 vans, low top laced ones. About tjhe same height as you, you think gr9's would be narrow for me too? My feet are kinda wide I guess lol.

I guess I'm looking for maximum comfort and deciding between these two pedals.

yummygooey 10-07-10 12:38 PM

I haven't tried track pedals like the Sylvans, but it looks like the cages will dig into your feet if you wear thin shoes like Vans. I wear size 8.5 or 9 vans are the GR-9s fit me well. I do not have wide feet.

illdthedj 10-07-10 12:44 PM

origin8 track peddles and hold straps. thats my setup, dig mucho.

Yup. Sylvians look cool but are sucky for riding more
than 3 miles. I had them and they dug holes comletely through 2 pairs of vans. They made my arches hurt real bad too. GR9s would have been a lot better. I've moved on to clipless though so no more clip/strap worries.

The best set-up is White Industries platform pedals with Bruce Gordon stainless steel half toe clips.

no.

Hartigan 10-07-10 02:26 PM

Toe clips looks strange in this one. Are those comfortable?

Have you tried the set-up I described and am using and like, or are you just another ghetto blaster with nothing meaningful to share?

Tomo_Ishi 10-09-10 01:26 AM

I think Adriano is talking about the price of White Industry's pedals. I think that pair of pedals are gonna be nice. Bare shield bearing with axle showing ... very exotic. If GR-9 is like a work horse, WI pedal is like a stallion ... in an gold-plated horse trailer and a group of trainers to go with it.

... But that doesn't mean I won't ride it. If I find it second-hand at 10th of the original price, I might pick it up.

cococard 10-09-10 01:30 AM

I did All City all around, Track Pedals, Cage, and Delux straps.

Couldnt be happier.
