Rant: Cab Drivers ?

Ever get one that you just want to drag out of his car and pummel his stupid looking dumb@zz ?

Had one pull out on me from the curb without looking on an access road in front of a hotel (cabs line up on this road in this area) as I was cautiously going around several cabs. I can overlook the first incident as just too many people/vehicles in the area. So I'm riding in a gusty head wind, a North Easter that had me cranking a 46/16T gearing setup, I'm not really setting any land speed records and slowing down even more and then trying to get back to a relatively comfortable cadence in this wind was a chore. Then, after the taxi cab pulls out on me and I have to swerve out further into traffic to avoid that while braking, I get back over to the relative safety of the curb and the same taxi cab is now slowing down to what appears like they want to make a right turn into a hotel pickup/dropoff. Only the dumb@zz is crowding the gutter and then turns prematurely before the hotel pickup/dropoff to block me again by steering his front tire into the concrete curb (not the gradually leveled down part of the curb, but the fattest part of the curb). After this I just got frustrated with this idiot and got onto the sidewalk to ride. The spastic cab driver isn't done yet, he decides to pull out onto the road again and drives up another 100 feet or so and instead of going into the hotel pickup/dropoff, he drives past it and up to a stop light that changed against him. By this time he looks over as I ride up to the light and beeps his horn at me. I flipped him a finger and continued to ride on the sidewalk. Trust me had there not been any laws for protecting this driver's rights, I would've dragged him out of the cab and wailed on him with my u-lock.

A u-lock love tap on the rear trunk lid works wonders.

you did the right thing, it may suck to accept but it's better to let an idiot be an ******* than to let yourself get shot or stabbed or runoverm be careful around cabs, especially when in an area where they can make money, a 5 dollar fare is worth more than your life to most cab drivers

cabbies piss me off, be it when im riding or walking, or even when im in the cab. some of them are cool, but most of them dont care at all. one of them (in pouring rain at like 2am) had a van converted to taxi and told me he'd have to charge me $20 extra to throw my bike in his cargo/luggage area because it would cost that much to clean up after my mostly clean bike. jerk.

The cabs I have a problem with park in the bike lane or try to kill me by going into my lane inside the bike lane. If there is no bike lane I don't even see cabs.

I don't really have an issue with taxi cab drivers in general, but this one seemed to be going out of his way to annoy me. I figured I was tolerant considering that I allowed him right of way when he didn't have it when he pulled out on me. That's self preservation anyway, bike vs car is a losing proposition for me. Then he kept on doing whatever he could to block & inconvenience me further and I let that go too and the last straw was the horn beep, I only looked over at him because after the first 2 stunts, I wasn't even sure or comfortable about the next move he was going to try to do ?

If anyone asks me why I did it i'm saying "My doctor advised me to."

Dr. Banzai 10-06-10 10:11 AM

I'm so down with that.

This cabby's a menace on the road. Have to wonder how many other cyclists he tried to mow down. I report all cabby ***holes to the DMV, Consumer Affairs and the cab company. Cyclists have a right to the road, and cabby's, in particular, don't get this, but you know this firsthand. Glad you managed the situation without going up on charges, and with your limbs and life intact.

Haven't had any bad experiences with cabs here, but some of the bus drivers can be scary. Like riding 10 feet behind you at your speed scary.

F cab drivers. I feel like I've had more incidents with them than with any other kind of driver and I'm surrounded by rich holier-than-thou teenagers.

cab drivers are one of the worst drivers around, 2nd only to limo drivers.

A cabbie hit our mayor here in Los Angeles while he was riding his bike. It was fortunate and unfortunate at the same time. He's passing more cycling laws in favor of the cyclists.

MrJay 10-06-10 03:46 PM

Cabs and buses have been my biggest problem.

Exactly. And they absolutely love cutting you off in traffic. Whether you are on bike or in car.

Yep, it's unfortunate that there has to be a victim and it hit closer to home, before anything is done about it.

With the buses, I've had some really weird times & stretches of road when they seem to be congested and several of them stopping and going from a series of bus stops not more than a hundred feet or so. The larger cities are that way. Heck, I've even seen Miami-Dade buses that are not in service driving around and at times, it seemed that there were more of them not in service than in service ? When it gets to that point, I just pull over and wait a few until they clear the area. Same goes with cabs, but there are a lot more of them, so really stopping and waiting them out of the area isn't an option. It's why I'm extremely cautious in that area and I know had I been mashing hard thru there I would've been in an accident, well, maybe the likelihood would've increased exponentially with this guy driving ?

My thoughts on that, I can be moving pretty quickly on the bicycle and it's hard to track me at any given moment. I might be in a blind spot, but it's also why I'm cautiously slow.

You'd think that their forums forums are spammed with cycling hate. Ether way this might be fun to check up on every once in a while

Serj, LOL, that's too funny. Cabbies on a forum are missing out on fares. Unless they are on their iPhone posting to it ? Which would explain why some of them drive so poorly ? ;)
