I've done a fair amount of distance on my fixed gear, and much more with gears, topping out at a fairly hilly 300k in 13:30 fixed. The biggest difference I've found is the increased discomfort caused by not being able to shift around on the saddle or stand up as much as with gears.

Before those rides I'd done a bunch of rides in the 40-60 mile range. Didn't really have any of the trouble others report when riding that far on a fixie.. no knee pain or ass pain. I credit the sputnik for being such a great ride and the fact that I must have successfully set it up just right for myself. I think long distances are completely do-able on a fixed gear, even more if you have a good base of miles built up beforehand.

i have done quite a few centuries on my 46x16 sputnik ('07, w/woundup fork, volos wheels)...a dozen in the last 3 years or so (but none in the past 6mos), including back-to-back 100mi days for the local (dead-flat) ms150. longest was ~120, worst had ~7500ft of climb. in any case, the sputnik is a *fantastic* distance bike. i generally run big, supple tires (25c open corsa), and always drops with levers. plush *and* fast.

Lack of coasting for me is about a 1.3 multiplier. Seat time on a fixed metric or fixed imperial century is made better by some gentle climbs to get out of that seat...

I do metrics often. Feels great. Plan on one this afternoon.

Yeah seems like you can't really beat the Sputnik for distance, especially among fixed/SS bikes. I forgot to say I do all my rides at 48x18 on 23c tires. It's an '09 with the stock carbon fork and I also have drops and hoods, though only one hood is actually covering a brake lever.
