clear coat polished components?
took an old stem and polished it quite a bit and made it look much nicer than before....
heard though that you must keep polishing it to keep from rusting....
was just pondering, could you then use a spray clear coat (covering any threads previously) to give it a protective barrier from rust/elements?
is this moronic? why? why not?
etc.
just curious, pardon my ignorance.

aluminum?
it's already rusted on the outside then.
now, if it's steel, unlikely, then clearcoat will make it dull, and not protect it anyway.

Plus clear coat/paint needs a rough surface to adhere. There is a reason why you sand and not polish an object before painting

Aluminum oxidizes. It will need periodic repolishing to maintain any real shine. Commercially available polished parts are typically anodized clear to preserve the finish.
I have no experience clear coating over raw polished aluminum, so can't say what sort of results you'd get.

that's what gives it a hard surface, but soft inside.
now, discoloured aluminum, due to dirt, salt or ammonia is something else entirely.

i polished a stem last winter and waxed it. i am not sure if the wax did any good, but after almost 6 months the finish still looked pretty good. regardless, i took 5min and hit it with mothers aluminum polish and then another coat of wax and made it look "fresh" again.

I've never clear coated polished aluminum, but the polish itself will protect the surface somewhat. I think wax helps a too, but I'm not 100% sure. It certainly can't hurt. I've found liquid chrome polish to work pretty well on aluminum. I use it on just about everything.
