When it's really cold, I wear a non-insulated snowboarding jacket with layers under it. Not cycling-specific, but it's the warmest jacket I own and it's waterproof which is the biggest concern in the PNW....it's also long enough that it covers my back when I'm riding in my drops, and has pit vents.

I guess it's not terrible, but that's a pretty unflattering fit.

probably fit better if he was smiling.

wonder how the back is

illdthedj 11-09-10 03:15 PM

hmm...any cycling cut run jackets with a hood? perhaps a very thin one with a bill that folds up and zippers away or something ;p

merino wool deals with water quite well. But that's not to say that it's water resistant. I wouldn't wear it in rain. If just a little, it repels water and u can brush it off quickly before it absorbs.

yummygooey 11-09-10 04:34 PM

I wear one of these:

http://www.outdoorwarehouse.co.uk/fi...fire-flint.jpg

It's a Marmot Windshirt. The whole thing stuffs into the chest pocket and weighs next to nothing. Obviously it's not very warm, but it's windproof to an extent and water repellent.

Such a jacket may exist. But hoods and cycling don't mix well.

the merino wool hoodie i posted about a little earlier has a hood. i wonder if its more slim or something

LesterOfPuppets 11-09-10 06:07 PM

Hoods and cycling work well for me. Baseball cap is crucial to keep the hood from infringing on your view. My olde Nashbar jacket had a giant hood that fit over helmets no problemo.

I came across the Nike Vapor jacket a little while ago. Has the tapered back as well as a hood. I like it, but it's expensive for what it is, i think.

so what kind of head / ear protective gear do you wear, besides your helmet?

calbob76 11-09-10 06:17 PM

northface but they are expensive unless your bass pro is like mine

Like carleton said, cycling specific jackets are cut longer in the back just for this purpose. My jacket is hiking specific, which worked pretty well too (for me, anyway), but cycling specific stuff is definitely what you're looking for.

There was a thread about this hoodie a little while back; lots of detail and comments about how much people loved it. Probably make for a good read (if you can find it), if you're interested in the hoodie.

My hiking jacket has a hood, which I had used in a really, really heavy downpour once. Most of the time, however, a cycling cap under the helmet should be more than enough.

lol my company makes a wind breaker. In gray with all purple accesiors. zipper tighten strap etc. I liek it looks really hhipe

LesterOfPuppets 11-09-10 06:49 PM

In my experience, compared to a typical shell, it's not that bike jackets are longer in the back, they're just shorter in the front so it won't bunch up on ya.

I ride with an H and M windbreaker, it does the job. I dont really see the point in spending alot on a jacket you're just going to sweat in.

tofoot 11-09-10 10:18 PM

try orage.. i just got a byron softshell (not the cotton one) for cheap... warm enough for me to ride to work in ~0*C weather..... the one i have is not 100% windstopping but with a merino tank top and micro fleece long sleeve i was was more than toasty... perhaps too much... i'm still trying to find my balance.

for a full-on rain jacket i searched forever and found a marmot precip for ~$50 on ebay (definitely a score)... a great jacket... well fitted... technical aspects, but doesn't look 'robot'...

yummygooey 11-09-10 10:25 PM

I also have a two-piece North Face jacket I ride in, though since it's still fairly new the arm and neck areas are still kind of stiff. Both layers are windproof = wind ninja.

dsh 11-09-10 10:52 PM

Orage is ridiculous.

the idea is that if you spend enough money you won't sweat in it, or it will ventilate you enough that you won't sweat buckets
