I ride with an H and M windbreaker, it does the job. I dont really see the point in spending alot on a jacket you're just going to sweat in.

tofoot 11-09-10 10:18 PM

try orage.. i just got a byron softshell (not the cotton one) for cheap... warm enough for me to ride to work in ~0*C weather..... the one i have is not 100% windstopping but with a merino tank top and micro fleece long sleeve i was was more than toasty... perhaps too much... i'm still trying to find my balance.

for a full-on rain jacket i searched forever and found a marmot precip for ~$50 on ebay (definitely a score)... a great jacket... well fitted... technical aspects, but doesn't look 'robot'...

I also have a two-piece North Face jacket I ride in, though since it's still fairly new the arm and neck areas are still kind of stiff. Both layers are windproof = wind ninja.

Orage is ridiculous.

the idea is that if you spend enough money you won't sweat in it, or it will ventilate you enough that you won't sweat buckets

welp, i just got my swrve windbreaker in the mail yesterday....
and i also ordered a chrome champ jacket for half off on gilt group....wouldn't have bought it otherwise....

anywho, my 1 day of wearing the swrv windbreaker review:

i think it looks awesome. ill get that out of the way. cool assymetrical zipper, has double zipper so you can zip the bottom out and keep the top zipped.

rode in it once, and definitely blocks the wind. havn't tried out its rain repellent yet.

the cut is nice, the back definitely tappers downward to protect the lower back/ butt crack lol

two pockets on each side...zippered....seem to be more on the side than the front, im guessing its better for riding with crap in the pockets.

a bit of ventilation area in the pits.

now, the material is incredibly super thin. like, im a bit scared to get it caught on anything. seems easy to rip, although i could be wrong. luckily the fit is a bit on the slim side.

elastic cuffs, long sleeves, even with my condor like wingspan.

i like it, feels nice when riding, BUT i dont really feel like i got what i payed for. it was 100 bucks which seemed middle of the road for cycling jackets. if it was 60 bucks i would give it a 5 out of 5.

i will come back if this thread is around and write a followup down the line.

once the champ comes in, i will review it too.

I bought the Cyclical Event jacket. It was just so cheap that I couldn't resist. :innocent:

anyone got anymore? this is a good thread

Arcteryx sidewinder.
Bombproof. Amazingly the thing I like least about it is the side zipper.
otherwise perfect fit, and material is superb.

How would you say the bombproofedness compares to that of your phils laced to deep vs?

More, less, or the same?

I have a Swrve mid-weight softshell hoodie that I got on closeout for $50.00 and have worn it just about every day including a week long trip to Boston. Completely windproof and supposedly waterproof too (according to Swrve, I have not tested it myself). I absolutely love it. It is cut cycling tight so it tapers a bit at the waist and that gives it a flattering fit. I've worn it paired with a Mont Bell Ultralight Thermawrap jacket on 30F nights and with only a t-shirt on 50F days. Off the bike I layer it under an overcoat or leather jacket. The only things I would improve like side-loading rear pockets, pit zips, better rear visibility (hood kind of gets in your way), and brighter color options seems to have been addressed with the current model. Though at full cost. Made in the USA! I absolutely love it and I might just buy another one.

soooo i just got my Chrome Champ jacket in the mail in the above color....
regular its 140, i picked one up because Gilt Group had it for 70!

and my review is...

its really really awesome.
fits perfect on me. a slim-ish fit but still roomy and easy to move around in.
works great against wind, doing pretty damn good against the rain.

large arm pit zips are going to come in handy for when i build up heat.

cool cuff detail: long strap and heavy duty button can be strapped around each way, to either hide or show long super reflective stripe.

HUGE pocket on back...almost like a backpack pocket!

magnetized butt flap! lol...it stays up under the jacket when snapped into place with cool magnets, then folds down for added butt flap protection, AND has a long super reflective strip for visibility.

pocket on sleeve, front big breast pocket.

this particular color looks kinda bright online, but came out looking more grayish in person, which i really like actually.

inside collar is lined with quasi fuzzy and comfy feeling micro fleece or something like that.

to be nit picky, downsides:
im really used to having side pockets...you know, to put your hands into. this dosn't have those. i find myself reaching for side pocket zippers that arn't there.
the price is quite hefty at 140. although i paid 70 and am stoked on it, but if i paid 140 i would feel....well i guess i would feel like i got my money's worth more or less. but its always nice feeling like you got more than your moneys worth.

this thing feels SUPER rainproof, but as i have worn this in the rain....what about the head? seriously, if this thing had a super slim, well-cut hoody...that either zippers off/on or buttons off/on...or folded up and zipped into the back collar, (and had some side zipper pockets) it would be the best jacket ive ever worn.

all in all, so far, 8.75 out of 10.
