Mission Workshop Rondels: My sole is falling off.

***** NO ADRIANOS ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT *****

I pre-ordered my Rondels the first day MW offered them, and was super psyched when they arrived. For two months I've worn them daily on and off the bike. They're the best looking, most comfortable off the bike clipless shoes on the market.

Then, after two months:

For a product from a premium manufacturer (with the premium price tag), this is not cool. After barely two months of use, and probably less than a thousand miles, there is no reason for the sole to be separating like that.

It's not a crippling problem, as it's easily solvable with a little epoxy. This is still the best looking and most comfortable walkaround clipless shoe on the market, but there's no excuse for this quality of construction.

I'd still recommend them to people because the real structural stuff - the stitching and the eyelets and the reinforcement around the cleat - all seem legit. But I thought it should be mentioned somewhere.

It's all fun and games until someone loses a sole.

That really sucks, especially given their price. Did you contact them about it?

dsh 11-14-10 05:41 PM

Not yet, just discovered the issue half an hour ago when I kicked them off.

I'm not even sure what corrective action I'd have them take. I wouldn't send them back for a replacement, because I can fix them just fine with stuff I have at work and I don't want to be without shoes for two weeks while I wait for shipping. I don't want a refund (assuming they'd make me send the shoes back) because they're still the best casual clipless shoe out there.

Cages and Double Straps FTW

EDIT: Bummer about the shoes though. I have noticed quality issues with my Chrome Midways as well. The rubber surrounding the other facing sole is peeling away slowly but surely. However, I debated on complaining to Chrome and since these were free from the giveaway awhile back I decided against it.

Scrodzilla 11-14-10 05:48 PM

That happening to any two month old shoe would not have me calling them the "best" anything.

Don't use EPOXY or any other hard-curing adhesive. Adhesives like these will ruin the sole and the leather, and will further decrease the life of the shoe. Instead, use a contact cement made for flexible applications. BARGE makes a good product available at hobby stores. Look in the leather craft section.

dsh 11-14-10 06:50 PM

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

He has been. You lose. See post #395 of the Banned Users thread >>> http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...d-Users/page16

dsh 11-14-10 07:04 PM

Well obviously the implication was "if he ever gets unbanned and sees this thread..."

TejanoTrackie 11-14-10 07:06 PM

Obviously.

I would use shoe goo, like I already suggested. You can get it at *gasp* Walmart.

Cages are super-handy on many pedals. Clips, too.

hey dsh, no offense to you but i don't you can really make absolute declarations like that.

first, "best looking" is entirely subjective.

and to say that the Rondels are the "most" comfortable, you would have to have tried every shoe on the market, which i doubt you have.

haha sorry to be stickler on the wording but yeah.

sorry to hear about your rondels. I just ordered a pair of DZR GMT-8s last week. hopefully mine wont come apart.

best of luck with your shoes bro

TejanoTrackie 11-14-10 07:30 PM

bravo!

first off, they're th same shoe with different materials, so unless the glue they use grips the gmt-8 material better than leather, it should be the ZACT same.

second off, i'm sure mission workshop will warranty the **** out of your shoes.

made in china, yada ya ya

Good ol' adriano vs. dsh thread, full of lulz as usual.

Good to see you back.

Thirded. Shoe goo is the perfect thing to use for gluing shoes. Imagine that.
My buddy used it for that exact application, gluing a sole back on. Worked perfect for like another year until the shoes were just gone as a whole.

It's sorta like a hot glue gun, without the hot and gun, and it sticks to stuff way better. Same rubbery flexible feel though
