bar tape

What is your favorite bar tape?

riot2003 11-30-10 11:51 PM

I'm pretty fond of the Bontrager gel tape.

xkillemallx16 11-30-10 11:54 PM

fizik, and dedatapes almost as good.

I've been using the MEC velvet tape for the past month and a half and I love the way it feels. I used to use their cork gel tape but it ripped so easily.

The velvet tape can withstand a lot of stretching and rewrapping, fits very snug on the bar once it's nicely stretched.

Lately I'm liking the Easton tape. Very stretchy so it goes on easy and very cushy. The price is right too.

Im a big fan of the Fizik tape with their gel pad under. A bit pricier, and they run a bit short, but super comfy.

Deshi 12-01-10 02:18 AM

Iv got in the spare parts bin:

1 package black Fizik with no logos
1 package white Fizik with no logos
1 package yellow Cinelli cork
1 package blue Cinelli gel cork
1 package grey Salsa gel cork

On the bike:

Black Fizik half wrap on the Schwinn

Yellow Forte cork on the Pinarello

Id say the Cinelli cork is the most comfortable, the Fizik is the most durable and grippy, and the Salsa was free.

The Forte was just cause I needed it bad one day and didnt want to wait till I got home. It is pretty comfy, impossible to clean, and is not at all durable.

cloth bar tape irks me unless i'm wearing padded gloves. then i like it.

some of the best feeling bar tape is that synthetic cork stuff with gel on the back. i have some felt bar tape that i love. fizik is AWESOME but can be a little hard on smaller diameter bars. i have it on my ritchey biomax and like it but to be fair i'm in the hoods most of the time. and it's expensive.

cinelli cork is moderately better than generic cork but i honestly don't think there's a big difference. i'm about to put some profile tape on the kilo.

avner 12-01-10 03:00 AM

I have used Fizik and Cinelli.
The Cinelli cork is on my RB-018's and I really loved the way it felt. I have the Fizik on my RB-021's and it's alright. Good grip, no problems with sweat causing slippage, but it doesn't provide the same "YEAH IM HOLDING ONTO SOMETHING NOW" feeling the cork does.

it's all about lizardskin bar tape.

Specialized Roubaix tape is also stretchy and cushy. It's my new favorite. Previously I liked the Fizik Mirco stuff in the black or grey velvety versions. Bontrager makes a sticky one too that nice.

vw addict 12-01-10 06:41 AM

I've been using Specialized tape because i can get it the cheapest.

+1 on the Bontrager Gel Tape. I have the brown on one of my Raleigh road bikes and it adds a touch of class along with being nice and cushy. I don't wear gloves when I ride that bike because they don't really help any and it feels better without.

I also have used cotton on an old Schwinn Letour and I love it, haven't lacquered it yet, not sure if I will or not. Just recently tried hockey tape. The tape I bought is black and is purported to be cloth, but it doesn't feel at all like the other cloth tape I used. It also is a pain to work with because if it kinks, it sticks to itself and is hard to get unstuck. I put two layers on some older, thin, drops and it looks great. We'll see how it wears.

Same- it's all my LBS has, but I really like it.

PlattsVegas 12-01-10 11:58 AM

I just use some generic synthetic cork tape i got off Jenson. Never used anything else. cheap, stretchy, plenty of cushion.

geist 12-01-10 12:23 PM

Fizik Microtex or Cinelli Volé.

simonaway427 12-01-10 12:27 PM

I used Axiom cork tape on my latest bike. Very very comfortable, more-so than the Fizik stuff on my Cervelo.

Can't speak to durability yet however....

hairnet 12-01-10 02:22 PM

I like Fizik the best but I've found the Origin 8 cork tape to be pretty good
