Surly alex da22 rims surly steamroller

So I got my steamroller in the mail and just went to the bike store to get 700x32 tires they only had 35's so i bought them. I cant seem to get them on my stock alex da 22 rim they seem to big. Is this possible? I don't see why surly would put stock rims on there that cant accept wide tires when there suppost to fit up to 38's so what to fit bigger tires I have to go buy new rims also like wtf? Has anyone put 35s on there stock rims. Im going to go keep messing with them in the garage ill check back in a little bit.By the way they are bontrager galaxy plus's.

I have mounted 32 and 35 tires on those rims without a problem, my guess is it's with the tire and the thickness of the bead. Are they wire or kelvar bead?

I have put 35's on my steamroller. Panrancer t-servs. Never measured them, but have read they run small.

They were kevlar, so that might have something to do with it. But had no trouble at all. In fact, putting on my gatorskins in 28 gave me more issues.

But anyways, surly never claims that those rims can take any size tire. They claim the forks and stays have clearance for 38's. You probably won't have any clearance with the front brake if you were able get them on, I didn't.

It rubbed. Barely, but it rubbed. Wasn't rideable. Got the other caliper, tektro 558 I think. But was riding brakeless for long enough while it was coming in the mail that I never put it on.

The tires will fit. Keep trying or take them back to the shop and watch carefully as the mechanic mounts them. Maybe check out some e-videos to improve your technique.

I have 28 gatorskins on mine, but that doesn't really help you. I've read here 32 is probably the highest you can go.

I've used some 38c Kenda tires on them, as well as 32c TG Pasaela and some Hutchinson 35c cross tires on them without any trouble.

Just keep working it.

I think the problem is your tire install technique, as i've seen 2.5 inch 29er tires on deep v's, just he-man them on there/

Yeah guys I emailed surly and they said this back. "Hi,
I’m not exactly sure why those tires wouldn’t fit on the rim we spec on the Steamroller. Can you explain in a bit more detail regarding what is going on and why the tires won’t fit? Perhaps you should have your local shop take a look at the tires and rims to see if they can make them work.
A lot of us run 35’s or 38’s on our Steamrollers with similar to stock rims without any problems. We have also used a wide variety of these large volume tires, perhaps it is something specific to these Bontrager tires, but I’m not very familiar with them.
Best regards,
Johnny". Its my fault for not asking for a tire with a 14 mm bead width iim gonna go back to my shop and tell them thats what I need. I just hate how they hang there tires on the ceiling so i have to keep making them reach up with this huge pole to take them down when looking at a tire/tread on it. And I get the same guy everytime who after i say i want a 32c all terrain tire with a little tread always trys to sell my something else directly after i say that he pulls down a 32c slick hardcase tire thats like $50. Aggrivating but maybe ill go return them get my $70 back and go to bells bikes. Guys employees aren't the most bike savvy ppl.

One of the reasons I decided to buy a Kilo WT instead of a Surly Steamroller is that I wanted to mount wide tires and the Alex SUB rims on the Kilo WT are much wider than the Alex DA22 rims on the Steamroller (22.8mm outer / 17mm inner .vs. 19.6mm outer / 13.9mm inner)

http://www.alexrims.com/product.asp?...=90&model=da22

http://www.alexrims.com/product_deta...=3&cat=4&id=88

Even though it's possible to mount wide tires on narrow rims, it's a heck of a lot easier with wider rims, and you're a lot less likely to damage the tube in the process. The DA22 rims are more suited to tires in the 700 x 23c to 700 x 28c range.

From Sheldon Brown:

I ended up getting them on. No break rub or anything just had trouble centering the front tire. I will post pics when I'm home from work. I was also pumping the back tire up anxiously after I got it on the tube was kinked I didn't know and exploded so I just threw on a 25 tube. Thanks for the help guys.
