Reynolds 853 Frame
Anyone making a 853 singlespeed/fixie frame?
i only know of schwinn's "Sprint" model.
854 or don't bother.
i passed a dude on one the other day, but i couldn't be bother to slow down and ask him what it was....apparently they don't make you any faster although some extra stiffness would be nice, i'm now riding a 20 year old bonded aluminum frame, it's making my old KHS Flite feel like a noodle....
Schwinn Sprint. Its good for the price for a high end SS/FG. But how many people ride one? Expensive is not what most folks asociate with the experience! :p
It HAS to be Reynolds 853? IMO, there are many more important things when choosing a new bike than getting that specific with frame material.
If you are going to run just a singlespeed, just get a normal road bike with 853 and run a chain tensioner or get an eccentric hub or bottom bracket for fixie. Besides the 853 Schwinn there's bikes some other options like ones with reynolds 631, older model Jamis Sputnik or you can get Reynolds 725 Wabi Classic. http://www.wabicycles.com/classic_bike_spec_teal10.html Looks like there is a closeout on the blue 55 or 61cm bikes for $575 complete. Sounds like a good deal to me. The biggest advantage that 853 has over these is the fact that the welds get stronger when built up. Almost all other steels get weaker at the welds. The Reynolds 631 and 725 will get you very close to the weight savings of 853. 853 is one of my personal favorite brand of steel tubes. I should change my handle to 853phile.

853, 854... whatever it takes.
not sure if he is still making bikes but my first fixed hear (in 2000) was a Harry Havnoonian and it was 853. wish i still had that little bike.
what did you do to it?
Yeah why does it have to be 853 anyway? I had an 853 frame and was not impressed. But Scandium....
always looking for excuses to post picts of bikes. my 853 zurich... love it

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I'm a 25 year old female I commute on my bike, and am not interested in 853 to make me faster, or to be extra cool. I'm just curious and yes I know there are more important parts on a bike. I currently have an old steel frame, and wanted to test ride a 853 frame and see if I can tell the difference, if any. I'll see if I can get my hands on a sprint, or similar road bike.
greensprout - i may sound like a broken record but i can really feel the difference b/w this 853 steel frame and my other bikes (aluminum and chromoly). the 853 with carbon bars, light wheels and 3/32 chain is the smoothest riding, most comfortable, fastest accelerating and lightest bike i have. i do love it - it is my favorite.

631 does this as well (air hardening?). the difference between 631 and 853 is that 853 is heat treated, which increases the tensile strength somewhat. both fine steel. i love my 631 sputnik to death.

I just bought a TET 853 frame. I'm looking forward to comparing it to my plain 4130 Motobecane Track.
You'll save a few grams of weight but I don't think the bike will be significantly faster than a 4130 cro-moly bike. An 853 frame was what weight weenie roadies were looking for back in the day to shave off a few ounces and give them a winning advantage but today they've moved on to CF bikes.

I've read that 725 is almost as nice as 853. No reason to post this other than I have been having wabi lust.

+1 Love my major jake |
if you are not racing, you will not notice the difference between 520 and 853, which will at most be a fraction of one pound. if you are racing, you wont be racing steel.
did somebody say wabi?
Oh my, yes. I want more thoughts on wabi as i am get closer to purchasing one, but don't wish to derail this thread haha
