Integrated bar + stem
Anybody here seen those old school mountain bike bars with the integrated stem? The "stem" splits off into two and is welded to the bar. I really want to buy one of these but can't find any online. I think they'd be awesome for fixed gear!

I think you're talking about "Bullmoose Bars" I once read about them in a repair book
I think the passage went something like this...... "By permenantly affixing the stem to the handlebars in this simple triangle configuration you gain added strength and create a nearly indestructible unit" They were common on early mountain bikes (The ones with the long wheelbase and solid frames). |
Check with your local bike co-ops, they probably have a lot of them that they'd give away for free.

I probably threw five or six pairs of those things into the dumpster when cleaning out the basement at the shop last summer.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Pretty common on a certain vintage of mountain bike. Chromed steel sets are pretty common (and heavy) but keep your eye out for the very fancy, Nitto aluminum, Ritchy branded variety.

Yeah, they were steel and rusty though.

Tried. The only co-ops are 40 miles away and no one wanted to come get them.
The shop where I work runs a donation program where we fix up crappy donated/discarded bikes and redistribute them. Often there are piles of leftover rusty and/or broken parts that end up just sitting around forever. We try to use everything we can but sometimes it gets overwhelming. |
:-p
I want to work at your shop. I work a co-op, but it's all volunteer work. |
Which Co-op hairnet? The Oven?

Globe beat you to the punch
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2483/...079b95636b.jpg maybe it's possible to buy one from globe themselves, or ask around for someone wanting to get rid of them |

Bullmoose bars... they were invented by Tom Ritchey back in 1980 and for a time they were the bar to have on an mtb and they are friggin' tough.
New ones will set you back $150.00... bet I have a few used sets up here I could send for the cost of postage if you can't find them anywhere else. They are really nice bars but there is only a vertical adjustment to them as they are fixed. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/siera45rear.JPG |
