Crank Slips on Singlespeed

I went on a ride today and half way through I felt/heard my crank make a "cracking" noise, but I thought I just ran a twig over or something. As I was riding back home I felt my crank slip, and a second time when I almost got home. I know the typical answer is to tighten your cog/lockring, but this happened when I was on my Singlespeed freewheel. Any ideas why? I plan on taking my bike to my LBS soon, but I just wanted to get a general idea of what was wrong.

Thanks!

chainring OK?

I'm not quite sure what I should check on my chainring. How could I tell if something is wrong with my chainring?

Freewheel might be toast.

What brand is it?

Maybe you need to check that your crankarm bolt is tightened down and the spindle isn't rounded off. Is it square tapered?

Thanks for the help, guys. Turns out my freewheel wasn't tightened down all the way. Still had about 1/8th of a turn left.

Best way to tighten your freewheel is to ride your bike. Crank hard up a hill and it'll be all set.
